You should try downloading the Windows 7 version of the software and drivers for you scanner from the Canon support web site: (click here)
From the "Select OS" drop-down, select either the standard (32bit) or 64 bit version of Windows 7 depending on what you have installed on your system.
From there, download the 4200F Scanner Driver and the CanoScan Toolbox software and select "Open" after download.

Canon has no driver for CanoScan N1240U on its website for Windows 7. But, if you want to try with the one for Windows Vista, you can find it here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_n1240u#DriversAndSoftware

Hi semidgs !
Unfortunately , there are no drivers anymore for your device under Windows 7 64-bit system but well under 32-bit system .
Here is a workaround :
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html.Back up your data first.
Both are easy and safe , no specific knowledge required .
I have installed Windows XP on my secundary ( Windows 7 on primary ) and everything is working fine .

Unfortunately , the production of drivers stops at W XP .
If you have the W XP install disc , you can install a virtual version of W XP on your machine from http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
If you still have the install disc , you can also partition your primary and install W XP on the new partition from http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html. Easy and safe , no specific knowledge required .

window 7 software is not yet available from canon

there is no driver yet for windows 7.but download scan gear and scan gear toolbox from here:http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0000473.asp open properties,compatibility and run it in compatibility mode for xp sp2

Sorry, but the compatibility sites say this is not compatible with Vista or Win 7.

They word is that Canon has no intentions of writing a win 7 driver for this unit.

You should probably backstep to Win XP so you can use this scanner.

These manufacturers are letting Microsoft make the hardware obsolete due to lack of drivers... a conspiracy???,

I use a Canon CanoScan fs 4000us with Windows 7. I Use program VueScan 8.6.63 and a USB-cable. It need no driver.

would I be able to upgrade to windows 7 without loosing valuable data such as family photos and endless videos? We are new parents so of course we have 1000 hours of video saved on the pc. We can't lose it and backing up on a external hard drive I just don't trust.
