The camera does not contain any charging circuitry and will not charge the battery when connected via the USB cable. In fact connecting via USB actually drains the battery faster because the camera has to communicate with the computer (even if only to say it has nothing to say).

The camera comes with a separate MH-63 charger. Take the battery out of the camera, put it into the charger, and plug the charger into a wall outlet. Once the battery is charged, you can put it into the camera and try connecting it to the computer.

Better yet, don't connect it to the computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Can I use software, USB cable, battery and battery charger from the nikon coolpix s550 on a s570 camera?

The S550 uses the EN-EL11 battery and the MH-64 charger while the S570 uses the EN-EL10 battery and the MH-63 charger. The two cameras have different USB connectors, so you cannot use the same cord. You can use the same software with the two cameras.

Can I download pics from coolpix s220 to my computer without installing the CD. It is my neighbours camera given to her as a present and she doesn't have the CD. I run XP and have an Olypus Digital

Your camera software should be able to do the job. As most of the softwares are compatible with most of the cameras in use. Try connecting coolpix camera with the usb cable and see if it recognize the camera. If so then you can download otherwise you can download the software for coolpix from the support site of Nikon cameras

My nikon coolpix s220 wont charge... do i have to have the original charger???

The S220 uses the EN-EL10 battery. The camera does NOT incorporate any charging circuitry, so connecting it to a computer actually drains the battery. In order to charge the battery, you need the MH-63 battery charger or a third-party equivalent.

If you need a charger, you can order one from your local Nikon dealer or from http://www.nikonmall.com

Coolpix s220 won't transfer pics via usb cable

If you can get the pics using a card reader, why are you insisting on using the camera and USB cord? Pros always use a card reader.

USB not recognized, no safe removal icon, wont switch off

I had the same problem. Nothing seemed to help, I even re-installed Nikon View. This helped, though. After you've connected the USB cable to both computer and camera, twist the camera end of the cable towards front of the camera. It seems like either the cable or the socket in the camera is damaged.
