I have contacted The Hellman Group and ordered a new gearbox. One of the gears stripped off inside.

Dear mpolly: I too am looking for the same gear I believe, if its the one that at the top of the long rod. Ours fell off as well and probably found by someone in there bag of pop corn. I will let you know if I find it.

How to fix this problem?

See if the gear at the top of the kettle rod is "jumping" and not allowing tehe stirrer to rotate properly. In my machine, this was caused by a broken black guide at the atop the two gears. The guide is screwed into place. It allows the gear to slide in and out as you rotate the kettle, but it also has to prevent the rod from moving back and forth or the gears will slip

Need instruction on a popcorm machine ccp509 and ccp-510. how much oil, butter, popcorn to you put in them. they came with no instruction.

CCP-509 User Manual
http://nostalgiaelectrics.com/manuals/ccp-509.pdf Instructions for use see Page 7

CCP-510 User Manual
http://nostalgiaelectrics.com/manuals/ccp-510.pdf Full instructions see Page 10

The instructions for the CCP-509 are not specific about the quantity of oil and kernels to use. The instructions for the CCP-510 are clearer, stating that for every measuring cup full of kernels ( 4 oz.) add 2 tablespoons of light vegetable oil.

Perhaps your problem like this?
When the kettle is popping popcorn, the metal rod with gear on the end pops out of place. Therefore, the kettle stops spinning and the popcorn burns.
>The allen screw that holds it in place need to be tighten.
