As odd as this may sound, it sounds like a problem in your keyboard. Make sure the volume button(s) or mute button is not partially depressed and stuck, and hasn't had anything spilled in/on it. If it's not that, you've probably got bigger issues that are going to take some qualified repair work, like parts swaps.

Candy,

First thing is first, Thank You for visiting our site!

The problem you having is a HARDWARE issue with that push button interface in that HP.

what you can TRY

1. Take the batteries out of it
2. Unplug it totally from power
3. Pu the battery back in then power it on
4. Then push that button

If those steps do not work the laptop will need a new interface touch board. What is happening is its not recognizing your trying to turn the mute off.

The mute is off in the operating system DOES not construe for a fact that the issue is resolved if the button is still orange.

You will need a new touch board if the reset does not work.

You might want to contact support.hp.com to have them send out a tech or have it repaired by a authorized HP repair center in your area.

I hope you found this information Helpful!

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr, the mute button and the wireless button on the top touch pad has quit working along with the volume slider. Any suggestions?

My mute button on my hp pavilion dv7-1262us stopped working after I updated my IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC through Microsoft update. The volume worked but the button stayed orange. I went to Device Manager- Sound, video and game controllers then IDT Audio CODEC. Click the Driver tab then click the Roll Back Driver button. This rolled the driver back to an older version but it fixed the problem. This is a Vista machine. Hope this helps.

Mute and volume buttons change themselves

Yes, either flex cable(panel to motherboard) from control panel is bad or control panel itself.
Common problem.

DUDE, i have the exact problem with my laptop. I actually find myself keeping my finger posed above the mute button as well, it's ridiculous. Might be fluke, but after dowloading this software, i played an entire youtube video without it muting itself.
