The tv was turned off with the remote 'set' button. Now, none of the power buttons including the one on the tv itself work to turn the tv on. Perplexed.

If both your front panel and remote control are disabled, the best option would be to perform a factory reset to restore the TV to its original settings.
To reset the Sharp LC-40LE830U to factory settings:
Unplug the TV from the power outlet and wait for at least 60 seconds.
Press and hold the power button on the TV for 5 seconds while the TV is still unplugged.
Plug the TV back in and turn it on using the power button on the TV itself.
Once the TV is turned on, press and hold the "input" and "volume down" buttons on the TV simultaneously for 5 seconds.
The TV will then enter the service mode menu.
Press the "menu" button on the remote control to navigate through the menu and select "option."
Select "factory reset" from the options menu and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.
Note: The factory reset will erase all custom settings, including parental controls, picture, and audio settings.
Turn your TV on by pushing either the power button on the front of the TV or the power button on the remote control, which is located in the upper right corner of the remote.
Step 2 Press and hold the "up arrow" button on the remote control. The up arrow button is located in the middle of the remote, to the left of the "Input" button and below the "Picture" button.
Step 3 Press the power button on the TV while still holding down the up arrow button. The TV will turn off and then turn itself back on.
Step 4 Release the up arrow button. Once the TV turns itself back on, it will restore your TV to its factory settings.

I had the same problem. I also use rabbit ear antenna , no cable or satellite. I was watching ch. 33.1 and the tv turned off by itself. The remote wouldn't work. The power on/off buttons on the side of the tv wouldn't work. I had to un-plug the power cord to turn the tv off. The tv forze on ch. 33.1 when I turned it back on.
I called Vizio, they told me they received hundreds of complaints from people in Texas complain g about these problems.
I was told to un-plug the antenna cable and re-plug it. I did this plus I re-scanned all channels. The problem has been solved, the channel (33.1) no longer freezes and the tv doesn't turn off by itself.
My son put a penny in the SD card slot of my Pansonic flat screen tv. I finally got the penny out but now the volume and tv controls do not work. I can change the channels through my cable box but that is it. The volume does not work on my cable remote or the flatscreen. What do you suggest I do to fix this problem?? Thanks, Josh
First of all, forget about the remote and see if the TV functions normally using the buttons on the front of the set itself. If the TV will not power on with the power button on the set itself, then something is wrong inside the TV. If the set works fine from the front buttons but no longer responds to that remote, then the remote has either gone bad or was accidently set to a different brand. In this case, look for the original book that came with the remote (or TV if it is the original remote) and follow the instructions for setting the remote back to Zenith. Try that and post your results here.
It sounds as though the TVs in a demo mode. Has someone recently been over and was playing with the remote. If so go into the menu of the tV set and look for set up and demo mode. Turn off the demo mode. if this doesent help call i-866-427-3946 and talk to the customer service deptartment. Good Luck
