Bought a powered monitor as it said to do in the owner's manual, even though I thought it was weird as you usually use a passive monitor with a power amp. Purchased Kustom 10" powered monitor, hooked it up to monitor out....doesn't work. So, called Musician's friend who said "Oh, you never use a powered mixer with a power amp, and sent me a non-powered monitor. That doesn't work either. What do I have to do to get my monitor to work with this system?

    I did say what monitor "purchased a Kustom" 10 powered monitor." I did finally get it to work, the signal is a low level signal coming out so to use it, the owner's manual says I must have a powered monitor. However, it didn't say what kind of cord to use. So, I have a non-powered signal coming out of the power amp going into the powered monitor......what kind of cord should I be using, shielded/balanced or speaker cable?

You haven't mentioned what model and manufacturer the mixer is. I will have to guess and say that the monitor out on the board isn't providing signal to the powered monitor or the monitor out on your board is powered and is now damaged by plugging a powered monitor into it. Carefully reread your manual and determine if the monitor out on your mixer is powered or line level. Reread also and make sure that the signal you are monitoring is assigned to monitor out, levelled correctly etc. If you find that the monitor out is passive (line level) try hooking it up to an external power amp and speaker. A guitar amp will do for testing purposes. Start with a low input volume on the amp. Also make sure that if it is passive to use a shielded cable from monitor out to input. If your board has powered monitor outs you can use a speaker cable from monitor out to speaker input (non powered monitor speaker).

    Thanks. I wanted to know what mixing board you were sending the signal from to the monitor so I could look for images and maybe consult the manual if I can find one on the net. Without having a look I would say shielded balanced. If it is XLR to XLR it will depend on how the jacks are wired in the board and the monitor. If it's 1/4"on each end it would be shielded cable like a guitar cord is wired.

    Thanks, it's a Kustom Profile 2 Pa system. It's the one with the 8 band eq on the front. They have made some since that don't have overall eq, but mine does. The owner's manual does appear on-line if you google. The cable is 1/4 inch on each end, there is an XLR on the powered monitor, but I will not be using it. I did get it to work finally but was using a speaker cord and wasn't sure that was right. Sounds like I should be using a balanced cord instead.

You need a power amp for passive speakers. Line level signals from the other equipment won't drive passive speakers.

As opposed to front of house? If you want separate amplification of a monitor system then use either the aux send channels or sub-channel outputs or control room outputs (but check these are not amplified already) connected to a separate amplifier to power your passive monitors

hi,
this mixer has output's from cd/tape(rca plug) that can be used to connect an additional amp for output to a sub. It is designed to use for recording but may also server as a pre-amp output to an external amp of choice.

Check only one active speaker at the mixer output and report the results.
Connect only one of the audio inputs from the power amp at the mixer output (and the passive speakers at the output) and report the results.
Sometimes (in parallel connections) there are interferences from the volume controls.

Behringer pmp2000. I have Yamaha passive monitor and can not get sound out of it. any solutions.
The outputs are usually just for the front of house speakers - the monitors usually need their own amps.

Check the manual.

You have 1200 watss of power - so keep the volumes REALLY LOW to try things out - otherwise your speakers could be blown by the amp.

First off it's outputs to your speakers. If you had an extra set of powered or amplified speakers you could "Y" cable your speaker outputs. Your passive speakers won't work without an amp. You really need powered speakers or an amp for your extra speakers. (if you had powered/amp'd speakers you could run them off one of you "aux" out for monitors. Do not daisy chain your speakers connecting twi together, you'll change the resistance/ohms and damage your speakers. Trust me, I do this for a living.

You didn't mention what brand powered mixer you have, HOWEVER MOST powered mixers also have a line level monitor and main output jacks. These are almost always 1/4 inch jacks. In any case you should be using BALANCED lines to the powered speakers using either XLR or TRS connectors on the ends. Please tell us what powered mixer you have so we can give you better answer regarding which connections to use. IF for some reason your mixer does NOT have line level outputs, you can use a high level Direct Box to condition the powered outputs to be sent to the powered speakers..
Also make sure ALL your interconnected equipment is powered by the same receptacle or source to avoid damaging due to ground bounce on utility lines and circuits. This often means running an extension cord from the stage where the powered speakers are along with a snake of the audio cables.

I have four active and two passive speakers how do i hook up to amp
Assuming they are ALL mains and not for monitors connect this way:

Connect the passive to the A and B powered outputs. Please read my tip on Fixya regarding hazard of grounding speaker leads on channel A of PMP mixers.

Connect each pair of active speakers to the Main L and R 1/4 inch jacks using TRS balanced cables. Power these speakers from the SAME receptacle or source, even if it means running an extension cord to your mixer from where the actives are plugged in. FAILURE to do this creates a hazard of ground loops and ground bounce that can damage equipment. The Main L and R 1/4 inch jackls can drive more than one active speaker... these are line level signals. Make sure to use TRS balanced cables for this.

How do I connect monitors?
You run one or more of the AUX outputs to an amplifier then to a passive monitor, OR if you have powered monitors then you just run the AUX's as needed to the powered monitor(s)

You then adjust the "AUX" mix for each channel input to each of the AUX you are using for the monitors as needed.
