Optimal placement of these like speakers of any design will vary depending on room dimensions and your listening distance from them.

A good place to start with them would be the same distance apart from each speaker as they are from the listening position. In that position they should also be placed closer to a rear wall than any side wall, approximately half that distance.

Would a Yamaha RX-V1 drive the Bose 901 Series VI speakers well?

The Bose 901's can handle up to 450w per speaker, using the Yamaha receiver, would not be MY first choice. Considering you invested in bose for a the quality of the brand, don't short change it like that with a lower powered receiver. NOT saying it won't do it, IT WILL, HOWEVER, if you really wanna see what those bose can do, get something more than the Yamaha RX. (110 watts)
Speakers like power, its best to run them at a minimum of 225watts. the closer you get to the 450w the better. 110watts is just too low, and can damage the bose. HECK, under powering ANY speaker can damage it QUICK!.

What is a good placement for the 901 series VI speakers? I've heard the backwall is half the distance to the sidewall

Depends on the shape and contents of the room. Look up "best acoustic placement of speakers" in your web browser. Good Luck!

I cannot connect my bose 901 series v1 active equalizer to my denon av surround receiver avr-891

Short answer from personal experience.

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers.

The reason: You can't use the Active EQ (or ANY processor) in a tape Monitor loop with anything but 2-channel stereo material. As soon as you activate the loop you lose digital sources.

Adding to YOUR particular problem is that the Denon doesn't have a volume-controlled pre-out to feed that amp. If you want to deal with controlling the separate amp volume manually you COULD connect the Active EQ between DVR Out and the 901 amp IN but you would have a stereo mixdown instead of true front channel from the speakers.

Bummer.

I have a pair of bose 901, v1 I have a old pioneer vsx 5300

Not knowing anything about your specific amplifier or if it correctly configured for the 901 Active Eq, the first thing I would say is these are designed for analog stereo sources ONLY and a multichannel digital-capable receiver will NOT work properly with any devcie in a Tape loop.

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers.

Connect the Active EQ between the pre-outs and the amp input. Run speaker assignment, levels, etc and have fun.

What would be the best amplifier for a pair of bose 901 series v1 speakers. they are 450 watts max. i need good clean power and lots of it. what do you recommend.

I'm partial to any old Carver amp. Some M-400 Cubes bridged to 400 WPC would blow the walls out for you. Or if you want to keep some semblance of peace and hearing ability, I'd just get a nice M-200 for them. I've had both set-ups and the M-200T is fine without being dangerous.

What kind of amplifier and other accessories are recommended for bose 901 speakers

I would recommend a high power 2-channel amplifier, minimum 16 guage speaker wire, and of course the Bose 901 active EQ that matches the series of your speakers. I use a Yamaha mx-830 power amp & cx-830 pre amp 170 wpc They (Bose) claim that they're unlimited power handling, But if you use a amplifier with to little power and overdrive it to make it louder, you could damage the speakers or amp. With my 170 watt class A amp,the 901 series 6 will blow wind across the room. Go with the best amp you can afford! best for money- Yamaha,Denon,Onkyo!

Bose 901 v1 adding a amplifier

Option 1: Adding a Separate Power Amplifier - Best Option

https://deercreekaudio.com/blogs-%26-updates/f/connecting-your-eq901-to-an-audio-video-receiver-avr

This option requires that you add a separate power amplifier.
1) Connect the pre-out main left and right to the EQ901 inputs 1 and 2, and the EQ901 outputs 1 and 2 to the power amplifier inputs left and right
2) Connect your 901 speaker to the power amplifier outputs
3) The equalized signal will now play through the front left and right speaker outputs in the stereo and home theater modes.
