My phaser 740 has print that flakes off when you print pictures with real dark areas. I assume it needs more fuser heat or less paper speed. The problem is I can' t figure out how to adjust either of these items. Any help would be appreciated

Poor fusing of the toner onto the paper is caused by


1. Poor quality compatible/remanufactured toner cartridges that have the wrong toner in them. - Use OEM, or better quality independent toners (and complain to your current supplier about the ones you have)

2. Damp media - high moisture content in the paper prevents correct fusing. You'll probably see the paper 'steaming' as it comes out if this is the case. - Keep your paper dry, only load as much as you need.

3. Thicker than normal media. The thicker the paper, the longer/more heat it takes to fuse the toner. - Make sure you have the correct paper type set in the printer driver at print time.

4. Faulty fuser. Normally the printer will report if the fuser is not reaching the correct temperature, but there are instances when this does not happen. Also it is possible for the fuser heat lamp to blacken partially, resulting in an area of the fuser that does not reach the correct temperature. This problem will affect an area of the page which consistently (same place, and all the way down the page) shows poor fusing. - Replace the fuser.

Solid dark colours can sometimes be a problem. Try playing with the media settings. For instance, if you are set to say thin card stock, try changing it to plain paper. If you think about how the fuser works it may help. For plain paper, the fuser temperature is set high and the paper travels through fast. If you set it to card stock, the temperature is reduced because the card travels through slower thus preventing it from getting too hot as it is exposed to the heat roll for longer. Also, it might be worth trying a different paper stock.

If you mean the toner is not fully melting on the pages that you print. Then make sure you are selectin the corect paper type you are printing on. If you are printing on some kind of thick paper select heavy wieght or card stock. The fuser heats to different temps for the type of paper used. thiner paper dosen't need to be heated a much as thicker paper. Check your settings.

If by "flaking" you mean that the print is rubbing or flaking off then there are 2 possibilities. If you are using thicker than standard 20lb bond paper then when setting up the print job make sure you are selecting thick paper on your paper setting. This is a common problem if your paper is thicker, shiny or anything other than standard.
The other possibility would be a fuser defect of some type. But that would tend to affect standard black and white prints as well.
Try the thick paper setting as it will slow down the paper speed thru the fuser and will "fix" the toner to the paper better.

Without a doubt you have a problem with the fuser.
What that is caused from is buildup over time of ink on the heat roller. The teflon coating wears some and the ink sticks to the aluminum instead of pealing off onto the paper.
You then do not get enough heat or perssure to "fuse" the image into the paper.
Replacine the fuser will correct the problem.

At first I didn't think the paper was the problem, but I looked up the specs on it and is seems to be a paper designed for an offset press.
I suspect after reading the information on the paper that the coating is not designed for the high temperatures of a laser printiers fuser heat of over 350 degrees.
I do suspect the paper is the issue.

when this occurs the problem is most of the time with the transport roller, fuser / fixing assembly roller.question is the image still toner only and not fused to the paper.
In these areas there is offen a jammed and not removed piece of paper dislodged in the paper path or jammed in the fuser or the transfer rollers teflon coating has perished inspect the areas carefully and remove any found if the unit still is faulty (fanning of paper the fuser would be the first to be replaced are past there usable life) if so then Post a reply
