I think you will find the belt at the bottom has broken or come of here are the directions to replaced / re fit it

best of luck

merry christmas

  • Unplug the power cord of the Kenmore 70 series washer from the electrical outlet before attempting to replace the drive belt. Remove the end caps from the control console by pushing in on the center of the caps with your thumbs and pulling the caps forward.
  • 2 Unfasten the screws on the front of the control console with a screwdriver and set the screws aside. Flip the control console back so it is resting against the rear hinges.
  • 3 Locate the two-pronged electrical plug on the top of the washer near the back and unfasten it by pulling the plug straight up by hand. Remove the metal clips on the top of the washer, prying them up with a screwdriver and setting them out of the way.
  • 4 Lift the washer cabinet off the base and set it aside. Locate the motor at the base of the cabinet near the front and unhook the springs from the motor carriage with a pair of pliers.
  • 5 Unbolt the motor from the motor carriage, using a socket wrench to unfasten the bolts. Unplug the electrical wiring harness from the motor by hand.
  • 6 Lift the motor off the motor carriage and take the drive belt off the motor and transmission pulleys, discarding the belt. Place the new drive belt around the transmission and motor pulleys.
  • 7 Plug the electrical wiring harness into the motor by hand and secure the motor to the motor carriage with the bolts. Attach the springs to the motor carriage by hand.
  • 8 Place the washer cabinet back over the base and secure it with the metal clips on the top lid. Connect the two-pronged electrical plug to the top lid of the washer by hand.
  • 9 Flip the control console back down over the washer lid and secure the console with screws in the front. Place the caps back over the ends of the control console by hand.
  • 10 Plug the Kenmore 70 series washer into the electricity supply and test wash.

love your reply!!! but, my research is telling me that the 70 Series washers were direct-drive washers--instead of being belt-driven?????? i am hoping you are correct and my research is wrong. my job is to research and hubby going to dive in tomorrow :-)

ok looks like it is direct drive i have a friend who gave me this link he is crude in his diagram but knows his stuff when it comes to motor couplers and i strongly feel this is your problem i thought it might be a lid switch but the unit wouls work fine untill it came to spin so it has to be the coupler best of luck keep me posted

70 Series Kenmore Washer Agitates in Heavy Duty regardless of switch selection

Yours is a 2 speed motor. Does it spin in 2 different speeds. If so, then it most likely is designed with only to agitate in 1 speed. If it only spins in one speed, then your motor is defective

My Kenmore 70 series is 18 years old. It will not

Hello. Since your machine is 18 years old and the agitation/spin is costly to repair I would definitely recommend a replacement washer.

Kenmore series 70 washer will only fill with water.

I recently had this problem. It was found that the main drive belt broke and the washer would fill but not spin, agitate or drain. I replaced the belt and everything worked again. A defective or disconnected cover switch would also cause the same problem.
