I would say that you have carbon built up on the spray nozzle which needs cleaned. Remove the top housing by taking out the screws on the perimeter of the two halves. You should be able to see the nozzle at this point. If it is covered in soot, put on rubber gloves and clean it with a rag soaked in carburetor cleaner which is available at any automotive store. Wait for everything to dry and reassemble the unit and give it a try. If that was the problem. You should no longer see the fireballs.

The flame is probably too high and causing a lot of carbon to build up behind the flame shield you are gonna have to remove the burner chamber and clean and the adjust the flame by the screw on the back plate. Screw it in to increase flame and screw out to reduce.
