Wide lines and dark shadows on some pictures

When I upload the pictures to my computer, some come out with wide lines and/or dark shadowed lines across. Some are cut off mid way. I tried a new memory card and am still getting the same problem. HELP

  • kat2001 Jul 05, 2008

These lines do not show up on my camera, only when I download the pics. Could it be my computer? How can I fix?

  • kat2001 Jul 19, 2008

My camera was still under warranty, I sent it back to Canon and they found the optical assembly was loose.

    Thanks!

There was an issue with some of the A650 IS cameras that bright light or sunshine could sometimes enter the case and create such symptoms as you're describing:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=15658&keycode=2112&id=39151

Although your camera is not an A650, recommend contacting Canon, especially if your camera is less than a year old, to have it repaired under warranty service. Even if older, recommend contacting Canon anyways to argue free repair if your symptoms match that of the above link. Call 1-800-OK-CANON.

Have like black shadow lines about 3 to 4 inches wide on my screen

Dark shadows can show up on a TV screen when the images have been displayed for a vert long time and have now become stuck in the LCD and the screen for your TV . Or the LCD and the TV's screen might be broken for your TV and needs to be replaced.

My zenith lcd tv has horizontal black lines whih form a band about 3 inches wide across the screen, sometimes the band looks more like a dark shadow than lines other times the right side of the screen...

This is either 1 of 2 things, first it could be faulty panel tabs , in this case, there is nothing you can do and is unrepairable....2) you could take the back off the tv and you will see 2 ribbons going from your t-con board to the panel tabs (top center of tv) remove them carefully and reseat them. This is a common problem. Tv repair tech 15 years! Best of luck.

HP Laserjet 5P shading edges of page

This is probably due to a defective cartridge, Charge Roller or Transfer roller.

Check the cartridge for a band of toner still on the drum.

Check the Charge roller for oil or smudges, this roller should be a lighter color and should be relatively free of toner or marks.

Same as the Transfer Roll, which will be dark, though excess toner should be evident.

A relatively smooth straight line is generally the cartridge.

A rather wavey or broken line is most likely the rollers.

You can however attempt to print a large amount of pages (25-50) in an attempt to clean the parts, however if either part is defective they will need to be replaced and no manner of printing will clean them.

Shadow on image when using built-in Speedlight

The built-in Speedlight on many Nikon cameras is designed to be a convenient way to either light up a dark subject or to add fill light to a daytime scene. The built-in Speedlight cannot replace a full size, external speedlight which should be used when more power or coverage are needed. Because the built-in Speedlight is compact and close to the camera it cannot be used under all conditions. When using a lens that is physically very long, a subject that is very close, or a wide lens hood it is possible that a shadow may be cast upon the subject. Notice, in the sample below, the round shadow in the bottom center of the photo. When the lens is too long or the coverage is too wide with a close subject a shadow of the lens itself is cast. In figure "A" below the lens is casting a shadow. Switching (or zooming) to a shorter lens (figure "B") prevents the shadow and allows even illumination. If your lens, subject, or lens hood choice create a shadow, an external flash (either on the camera's hot-shoe or connected to the camera by a wire or wirelessly) should be used to fully light the subject.

What is the difference between wide and standard on a picture?

You will see more detail in highlights and shadows (i.e. if you are a few stops over exposed, you will still see the details of a white wedding dress. If you are a few stops under, you will see the details of the shadows of large canyons on the beach) using the wide feature. The wide mode is used to obtain a larger dynamic range with the S3. The standard mode uses the same dynamic range as the S2. If you are looking for faster write speeds, you would use the standard mode, as the wide mode takes longer to write information. Standard is also used to obtain a smaller Raw file size. Based on the scene being shot, only a photographer would know if he would need more dynamic range then usual. It depends on the highlights and shadows of the subject or scene.
