The problem is likely that you are using 8x/2x media. Though the booklet does not say it, the burner does not support anything above 4x for DVD-R and 1x for DVD-RW. Calling their tech support can (possibly) get an update for this problem. Otherwise, the burner cannot use anything but outdated media.

It took about 45 minutes, without a manual. Carefully disconnecting all cables and marking them so the would go back in the right place later. Carefully Disassembling the unit, removing the cover - 6 screws, noting all screws and where they came from, pulling the front panel using the plastic tabs, removing the top front edge cover - two screws, removing the disk assembly - 4 screws, pulling the two thin leads so I could pull the entire assembly out. Removing the back plastic cover from the DVD assembly and identifying the Optical Disc Lense. Spraying some LENSE CLEANER on the same cloth that I clean my glasses with, and carefully wiping across - gentle stroke in same direction, then opposite direction - a few times. Spray lense cleaner on the cloth not on the lense. Reassemble. Reverse order of above. Works great now. BEST OF LUCK....Or you can find almost any DVD repair facility. This is not a unique process. I would try cleaning the laser first!

if that doesn't work try another brand of dvd's
if still doesn't work i would think the laser is weak.

Just bought unit. Had same problem.Tried lots of different types of disks with no luck. Tried to play already written +R disk. Worked OK. Then took out and replaced with blank -R. Came up with new screen asking me if I wanted to initialize disk. Answered yes and it took about 20 seconds. Then tried to DUB from HDD to DVD again. This time it came up with the dubbing menu, I hadn't seen before, and worked.
Hardly ideal, but the trick was to get it to recognise it as a blank and initialize. Currently burning my first disk. Didnt realise about 'FAST' mode, so taking ages.

I have 3 of these machines. I do not think it likes theRW disc's. Two of my machines are 4X & one is 8X. I have very great success with 4X DVD-R & 8X DVD-R disc's. I hear they have a fix for upgrading to 8X speed. Here is the link with the information:

You can still buy the 8X speed disc's on the internet. Hope you can get the machine to work, because I love the ones I have.
