Anonymous Posted on Dec 07, 2010

I have a Panasonic PV-GS39 and want to put my movies onto computer that's running on windows 7. Using the USB cable doesn't work. Will the firewire cable really work or am I just out of luck? Thanks for any suggestions...

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The way it works on my computer, the camera is controlled by the computer software.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.

Whether this will work with Windows 7, I am not sure. My Mini-DV camera, using a Firewire cable, didn't need any camera driver loaded to the computer, just the movie editor that came with Windows XP.

I have windows 7 and want to put my movies onto computer

The chances are that a USB cable from your PC wont work on any windows newer than XP, you like myself will need Firewire cable from a good camera store.

My windows 7 laptop does not recognize my Panasonic Mini DV Camcorder PV-GS39 and therefore cannot capture video any ideas?

You are going to have to check that your firewire is being seen by windows 7 first of all. If not you will need to rectify that.
When you do get it to recognize it, here is a link for an update to the program that came with your camcorder for it to work with Windows Vista but it should also work for Windows 7.

Firewire

Okay then let's start with that. Download the drivers from:

http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Cameras-Camcorders/Camcorders/MiniDV-Camcorders/Drivers-Downloads/model.PV-GS39.D#ts

Install the drivers and you should be good to go! Let me know if you're having any problems after that.

Download PV-GS39 cam recorder drivers

Hello. I also have the PV-GS39. I had the same problem as you have, here is what I DID to resolve my problem.

1.Go to: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Cameras-Camcorders/Camcorders/MiniDV-Camcorders/Drivers-Downloads/model.PV-GS39.D

the above link will take you RIGHT to the web page to download the PV-GS39 Software & Drivers that YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE. But if you have WINDOWS VISTA then you can use the WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER software that is ALREADY PRE-INSTALLED on your PC then you will NOT have to download the software from the above link.

2. You HAVE TO have a: FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD. I got mine at: Best Buy for: $53.86 with taxes. the name of this card is: DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD.

3. You ALSO hae to buy the CORD that connects to the PV-GS39 and the DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD, the cord costs $36.79 ALSO at Best Buy.

I did ALL 3 of the above and now I'm copying my movies and videos from my tape in my camcorder onto my PC and BURNING the video onto DVD/CD Disks.

If you have any questions, you can email me at: [email protected].

Can not find USB in the menu setting

Try you "firewire" cable. If you do not have a IEEE 1394 port on you computer add one on the PCI bus, or you will have to get some unit to convert the analog output(A/V cable-port) of the camera to digital via the USB. [Turtle Beach-Dazzle- etc] Unless your camera's OEM editing/ingest program is made to connect through USB, the camera will ship only stills via USB. The audio and video transport via "firewire"/ IEEE 1394 ports. Edit with what ever you want, but I suggest "Scenalyzer" to ingest to you computer from your camera. http://scenalyzer.com

PV GS39 Win XP Movie Maker

I don't know if Windows XP Movie Maker can detect a firewire based video camera.

Do you have DVD burning software such as Nero in your computer? That has capture capability to it.

Pinnacle Studio will detect a firewire camera. It is reasonably priced and easy to use. In fact you can control your camcorder from Studio in case you need to rewind or fast forward the tape.
