Hi,
Yes, You should throw stale foods and fix the leaks.
You can use bubble test method to check all leaks. Repair the leaks and refill the refrigerant to restore your GE Freezer.

I have a kenmore model 970-254291 freezer. It runs all the time and has recently stopped freezing new foods. Could this be corrected by recharging the r131a?

dont know --what is r131a doesnt exist --- is it low on freon -has someone tapped a line in the past ---your system is a closed /sealed system that only needs freon if someone damages a line/component causing leak --yours can be any thing fron dirty condenser--failing thermostat--compressor or fan[s]

Damper not closing and ice melting'

Can you remove the rear panel in the back of the freezer so you can have a look at the frost pattern of the evaporator. I need to eliminate a Freon leak Karen? Has the compressor been running all the time? The damper will open all the way when temperatures increase, it is trying to keep temperature colder in the fresh food section by allowing colder air from freezer to enter fresh food section. What is the freezer temperature? Thanks Sea Breeze

I have a freezer that ices up about 12inches from the bottom model#HCMO5OEC and will not freeze the food

Hi,
your freezer has a freon leak and the leak would need to be found, fixed and recharged for it to work again...
this would cost more then a new freezer...

Kenmore leaking oil

Hi!!

You have a Refrigerant Gas (Freon) leak. Oil travels with the Refrigerant Gas thru the system, that's why you see the oil on the drip pans, if you look closely you should be able to know where is coming from.

For what you are telling me, it seems that the leak is of considerable size, I recommend to ASAP take freezer to a Kenmore authorized service station for a repair estimate, then you can decide to fix it or get a new one. If you call a repair tech, he will charge for the house call regardles.

Good Luck

Frigidiare upright freezer has just stopped cooling

I was hoping it would be something like a cracked door seal, or a faulty thermostat, etc., but after reading the rest of your info, I've concluded the likely cause is a slow leak in the refridgerant line(s). I've seen many of these fairly new upright freezers with this problem.

Finding the leak is easy for a service tech to find, but the cost of the service tech isn't cheap and unfortunately, the repair cost will probably exceed the cost of a new freezer, but you can try to call a repair tech and see if they can give you a rough estimate over the phone or if they think it's worth fixing, etc.

My advice is to replace it. The cost of food you've lost has probably exceeded the price of a new freezer - and you've had this happen twice now. These days it seems that some appliances are being designed and built as "throw aways" due to the high repair cost.

Wished I had some better news for you, but unless you've got all the specialty tools; (charging gauges, vaccum pump, Freon, etc.) needed to do the repair yourself, along with the technical knowledge, it's likely not worth having the repair service contracted. Best Regards.

Food thawing in freezer

You may have a small leak in the evaporator. You could try to get a replacement freon with stop leak from the automotive store and give it a shot. If it is a R12 unit then it is too old to repair. But it is worth the gamble to shoot it with freeze 12 or an equivilent before you condemn it.
