I have a dell latitude d600 laptop. All of the sudden this morning, with no prior issues, the screen just went black. However, when I hold it up to the light,I can see the the screen very dimly. So, the computer is running. I have tried all the tricks...taking the battery out, holding start button, etc. Does not work. However, I figured out that it will run on just the battery. The screen is a little dimmer than if plugged in but not bad. However, as soon as I plug the chord in, the screen gets brighter as usual and then it goes black. Again, I can very dimly see the screen in the light.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If your computer keeps on running after it turns black the problem maybe is the LCD. However if the computer is not running after it went black then possible problem is with the MOBO (Mainboard)
I am afraid it that the backlighting has gone out. It will probably need repair. Find a local computer repair (always check for three and get three estimates). Unless, of course it's still under the one-year warranty.
Laptop batteries normally just last for a few years, depending on usage. If your battery is almost done, it may report a 'full' status, but just have the capacity to feed your laptop for a few minutes.
You may check this by disconnecting current while your laptop is started up. If low battery capacity is the cause, the same will happen within a few minutes.
Laptops normally go in standby on low battery, to avoid data loss.
The test Dell advises to narrow down this issue is to remove the battery, hard drive, ram, and optical drive. Next plug in the a/c power cord and you should get some LED's coming on. If not it points to the motherboard.
