I have an HP Pavillion 420n. I noticed a smell like wires burning and then noticed that my display monitor had shut down (power to cpu and display still on). I pushed the power button on the monitor, it came on and before it could display my desktop, it shut down again almost as if in sllep mode. I looked inside and on the motherboard there are some discolored spots that you can tell got hot and some solder is bubbled, but there does not appear to be any connections burnt through. I would like to fix it if possible, but if I can't, can anyone give advise on how to access this computer with my laptop and possibly transfer the information from my hard drive to an external hard drive. Thanks. Stuart

Remove the Harddrive from the desktop computer.

BEFORE you start:

A) Unplug the computer from power.
B) Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity.
Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static before working on the computer.

Computer unplugged from power, computer on a table, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, upon your return be SURE to Touch the metal frame again.

The HP Pavilion 420n desktop computer has a 160GB Ultra DMA harddrive,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00054872&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=388431

Ultra DMA is a form of IDE. (IDE is also referred to as PATA,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA#IDE_and_ATA-1

I suggest you obtain an IDE (PATA) external enclosure, and install the Pavilion 420n's harddrive in it.

The external enclosure has a USB cable, that simply plugs into any available USB port on your laptop.

After the laptop is turned on, and Windows is loaded, (external enclosure already plugged into the laptop), click on Start>My Computer.

Double-click on the drive letter that corresponds with the external enclosure. (It has now become an external harddrive)

This is one example of an economical decent IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

Hp pavillion g7 shorting out

Monitor the CPU temperature. There are some free applications which will do this. When the CPU overheats it will turn the system off off without warning to save itself from being destroyed. Often times the CPU fan and passages gets clogged with dust on a laptop. It could be a bad temperature sensor causing the power-off. Put the laptop in the freezer for 30 minutes or so. Start it up and monitor the CPU temperature. If CPU temperature is not excessive, then remove other components from the system and bring it down to a base configuration. For example, go down to 1 memory dimm, remove add in cards, etc. Try to isolate the issue this way. I'd be very surprised if it was the fan somehow shorting out, it sounds more like inadequate cooling. Did you remove the heat sink from the processor? Is it securely attached? Is there the correct amount of heat sink grease? (too much or too little)

I am using hp pavillion g4 note book pc. now it produces burning smell what happened to my laptop.how it get back to original position

Components, including the processor (CPU), are overheated or burning. Unplug the computer immediately and try to identify the failed component. If it can be replaced, do so. Otherwise, try replacing the motherboard. Go to HP for documentation for installing any new component.

I have an hp pavilian atx-250-12z and the tower itself will turn on and the mouse to will turn on but the monitor gets no signal and the keyboard will not turn as well..I have unplugged the cpu while...

Whom ever told you too: "Unplug the cpu while holding down the power button".

Is telling you something that can "seriously damage" your cpu and computer.

Or did you mean "PSU" if so there is a particular format to do a Power supply check.
For the proper way use this link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06788&lc=en&cc=us&product=405227&dlc=en&lang=en#N207

Also many other things can cause the problems your having. Could be your motherboard too.

If this does not work, post again be sure to include HP Pavillion Model number and Operating System (i.e. XP, 7 or Vista) that way we can help pin point your system needs. Also have you done any internal repairs lately? Recheck all your connections too.

My HP Pavillion keyboard lights up but the screen is blank what can i do?

Press num lock key of key board if num lock led is on/off then your cpu gives display to monitor Then make sure monitor cable is connected properly to cpu vga port.
When you power up the cpu press F8 key then enter in "enable vga mode" Then go to start->control panel->display->settings.
Change screen resolution to 1024*768 then apply and ok.
Then check.
But if num lock led is not on/off and left constant then you need to open cpu cabinet.
Refix RAM memory.Pull cmos cell from motherboard for 10 minutes.
Clean dust from all parts.
Reattach processor and it's fan.
Make sure motherboard is not ground with cabinet.
Open motherboard from cabinet and try outside of cabinet.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Melting plastic smell/ computer slow and shuts down after about 15mins

Hi there.
The reason you can smell burning plastic and why its shutting down after a short time is because its overheating. This can be caused by a build up of dust on the CPU fan, overtime with dust build up computers struggle to keep themselves cool and tend to shut down unexpectedly, chances are this is the problem with your machine, my advice would be to remove the power cord, open the side panel of the computer and clean all the dust away from inside the tower, do this with a soft, clean paintbrush making sure you remove the dust carefully and gently, also make sure the CPU fan and the heat sync behind it is completely free of dust or any other foreign objects.
Once you are happy that its clear of dust, close or return the side panel, plug in the power cord and turn the PC on, you may find that the PC will stay on for longer with the smell dramatically reduced.

Please post back with the results and thanks for using FixYa!!

Hp pavillion a818n

I HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH MY PC AS WELL..... I HAVE THE SAME ONE. WHEN YOU USE HIGH CPU APPLICATIONS, YOUR FAN ACCUMULATES LOTS OF DUST IN IT, WHEN THE FAN GETS BLOCKED UP, YOUR PROCESSER DOESNT COOL DOWN, TRY TAKING THE FAN OUT AND THE METAL PART, AND CLEANING IT OUT, BUT DONT TAKE OFF THE WHITE PASTE... JUST TAKE OFF THE DUST FROM THE FAN, THAT SHOULD COOL DOWN YOUR PC AND IT SHOULD STOP RUNNING AT HIGH RPM'S.. FYI... THE FAN IS ALWAYS RUNNING
