I have an older Mitsubishi 52" HD 1080. I recently upgraded my cable box to DirecTV HDTV. When I change to format to view in 1080 the TV goes from full screen to what seems to be wide screen with a black bar on the top and bottom. If I change the format to 480p I get a full screen; but the picture has a "redish tint" over it as if looking through sunglasses...I tried everything in my TV manual even call the cable company. Any suggestions?

Using your cable remote or satellite tv remote as well as the one that came with the television itself. Press the hd zoom # button on the cable remote. Satellite tv remotes will have format or aspect. For satellite tv receivers you may have to go into the menu on the satellite tv box to adjust the picture format i.e. 1080i crop and etc.
Make sure you have the television on the right input for hd and that the cable box or satellite receiver is displaying 1080 i.
Since this is an older first generation (1999) HD TV it may not be compatible with newer HDTV receivers because the standards back then were different - Make sure the HD cable box is plugged into the HD component inputs on the back of the TV (not the DVD inputs) and that the menu setting on the TV is set to DTV (not RGB) video. This TV will only accept 480i and 480p signals on the DVD input. Also the HDTV input will only accept 480i,480p and 1080i (it will not work with a 720p signal, make sure your cable box is not set to that mode)
I have run into this issue alot. I believe its because of a older version of HDMI 1.1. Quick solution is to hookup the cable box with component cables(yprpb) to utilize the HD picture still and then do some research to see if Mitsubishi has a firmware update on your particular model.
Make it sure that you have a 1080 signal from your source(eg. HD receiver, bluray player etc.). Try pressing format button on the remote until you get full picture . Or try changing the format or aspect ration in your satellite or cable box.
The best cable hook up to use is the just the one HDMI cable. Just hook it up from box to TV and change the input selection on your TV to HDMI. Then on the Directv Box, change the resolution to 1080 for the best image.
I have an older Mitsibutishi 52" HD 1080. I recently upgraded my cable box to DirecTV HDTV. VJ-TRY RESETTING THE COMCAST RESOLUTION BY TURNING OFF YOUR CABLE BOX THEN PUHING THE CABLE BOX MENU AND YOU CAN USE THE ARROWS ON CABLE BOX TO ACCESS THE 720P AND CHANGE IT TO 1080I.JOE TV
This set does not support 480I in the DTV mode, only 480P and 1080I is supported.
Try setting the analog setting in the cable box to 480p and that should take care of watching the set in DTV. Most cable boxes have a setting for format changes in the customer menu, depending on the type of box. If you are able to change the format, then the other inputs will not work since they need a 480I signal, as well as VCRs.
Another setup could be to use the S-Video cable or Video input jacks to get a better picture in 480I instead of using the cable input. However, when changing from HD to Analog, you will have to change to the correct input on the set as well.
Hope this helps.
