The sequoia hatchback handle breaking is a known problem due to the extremely low quality of the plastic. 1st you have to open the back door! there is a small pin to the right side of the hatchback door exterior handle. bend a coat hanger and put it on the small pin, pull down and the door will open. Then remove inside panel and you can undo screws and replace the hatchback door handle.

SOURCE: Broken rear hatch door handle on Toyota Sequioa

It sounds like the handle has become disconnected from the mechanism. You will have to remove the inner door panel and reattch. It is not a complicated or difficult job but if you get a professional it could cost upwards of $100.

SOURCE: Cannot open hatch door

Remove the hatch interior cover...you can remove the broken hatch handle that way...also open it from there.

Dodge journey rear hatch wont lock. When you lock the car all the doors lock but you can still open the rear hatch

I would guess that either the wiring to the hatch lock is broke, or the lock or linkage isn't functioning. Have someone stand at the back of the car when locking the doors and listen for the latch actuator to click, if it does click then it's probably a broken plastic piece on the linkage, if it doesn't then either you have some bad wiring or the actuator itself may be bad.

2001 Jeep Cherokee, hatch door does not lock electronically, only when the hatch is 3/4 way open or more. So, locking mechanism works electronically, just not when the hatch is shut.

on the inside of the tailgate, at the top, there are two rubber grommets through which the wiring passes through from the body to the tail gate. I think the lock wires go through the one on the driver's side. Over time some of these wires break due to constant back and forth of the opening and closing of the tailgate.

In your case, when you open it 3/4 way open, the broken wire just barely makes re-contact with the other broken end.
I found the best solution is to remove the electrical connector from the tail gate, remove the grommet to find the broken wire, then solder a new piece and use heat shrink tubing to insulate it.

Rear hatch door in ford windstar-mechanism came apart

My back hatch would not open but it appears the lock was sticking and the return spring to the handle is broken. We used the key to unlock the back door and then door opened. Then husband sprayed WD 40 in all the lock holes. Now once we open the door we have to push the handle back down as return spring is still missing but the door opens :) . My van is a 2002 Ford Windstar.

Remove panel on the inside of the hatch, release lock from the inside then check the lock solenoid for power, check for broken link to lock, repair or replace it.
