Washes fine, but at the end of spin cycle the machine vibrates and makes loud banging noise until spin stops, also leaking small amount of water on the floor from bottom during the process
The most common cause of the symptom you are describing is a bad drive block which has probably ruined your basket drive as well. Let me give a quick explination. The weight of the basket you put your clothes in is supported entirely in the center of the washer underneath your agitator. It rests on an aluminum block called your drive block. So that the basket will move back and forth while the washer agitates, there are two tabs on the drive block that lock your basket drive underneath in place. Once the drive block wears out or round down these tabs, the basket will raise slightly and "skip" across the top when the spin cyle is stopped. To verify this, you can check one of two things. First (and easiest) is put a heavy, large load in the washer, get it wet then spin it out. Once the washer reaches the maximum spin speed, open the lid. The washer should snap to a halt when functioning properly. What I belive you'll find is that even with the lid open, the basket will continue to spin. The other method to verify this is take the top of the agitator off. Next remove the bolt in the middle of the agitator and lift the agitator off. In the middle, you should find a large flat metal colored nut.In the middle of that nut, you should see two tabs across from one another. There should be two straight pieces of metal coming up from the bottom which have nice, straight sharp corners. Again, if I am correct, you will find they have been rounded off and there may even be shavings of metal visable.
To replace a basket drive and drive block, you will need to purchase the parts and also a specialty tool from removal and instalation. These will probably run you around 125-175. If you are interested in giving it a go, reply back to me and I will get you some step-by-stpe instructions typed up.
i found that if at the max spin speed and I open the lid it make the banging noise and it didnt stop for a while. So it seems what is the problem is the basket drive and drive block.
I need an instruction to try replacing my self. Could you give me the instruction.
Thanks a million
mine does this thing with or without a heavy load it in. can you give me the instructions? please email to [email protected]
can you please send me the instructions as well. We already tried replacing the clutch & it did nothing. Would really appreciate it. Not sure if this matters, but is a whirlpool with the model # LSR8010PQ2.
Toby's solution was perfect. I ordered the drive block and basket drive online, along with the spanner wrench. Next, I followed two YouTube videos that explained the repairs in great detail. The YouTube videos are: http://youtu.be/lsgl6PSQwtc andhttp://youtu.be/AyVxl8ONW2c. I almost never post comments, but Toby's explanation and the videos were so good that I wanted to share them.

Thanks so much. You took alot of time to explain all of that and I really appreaciate it. I was expecting it to be the drive block from what I had found researching so far. I will let you know how this comes out, and will definitely refer back to you if we have problems with the fix. Again, thanks a million...I envy the woman who has a fix it all man!
I have what sounds like the same problem. If I spin the basket even when the basket is empty, it makes a loud metallic (metal on metal) banging or clunking sound at every half turn. I spoke with Whirlpool and they suggested replacing the clutch spring. I did this and it did not help at all. I have checked all the wear pads and plates and they are all in good condition. The shipping pins were removed as well. I have checked all the springs and made sure that the washer was level too. It does seem like the basket drops a little every time it makes the banging sound. Also when you refer to the drive block, are you speaking of the drive motor or gear case? I had the entire lower drive system apart today to replace the clutch spring and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Or at least anything that jumped right out at me. Anything you can tell me would be a great help. I was close to taking the entire top end apart before I came across this posting. Thanks Josh
Also I don't know if this makes a difference but my model number is LSQ9010PW6. Thanks
My washer makes a really loud vibration when it's stopping the spin cycle and going into rinse. When it's making the noise and slowing down, the water has already started to fill before it's stopped spinning. There used to be a delay between the spin cycle stopping and the water filling for a rinse.
I have the same problem - Whirlpool Ultimate Care II, loud baning at the end of each spin cycle. There used to be a delay to the start of the water being added, appears it maybe starting before the end of the spin cycle.
