My Gateway NV5378u laptop does not turn on. I have tried swapping the battery from another computer (NV5378u also) and running it on just ac. When the power cable is connected to the computer, the cord loses power (the green light turns off and when connecting to the other computer, must be unplugged and plugged back in before it has power)

SOURCE: Gateway nv52 won't turn on

I also had this problem. I turned it off and it would not turn on. I found the solution. First, extend the laptop screen as far back as it will go. Don't just stop the screen at a ninety degree angle. My laptop screen pulls back to about 135 degrees. Now press the power button. It should start up.

Why do I think this works? Well...I used to own an older model thinkpad that had a short "male" connector on the screen, that when the screen was folded down would enter into a "female" connector on the base of the unit and trigger sleep mode on the unit. This is how the system could automatically hibernate when the screen was closed. The little male connector broke off, and I couldn't get the system to wake up, because the connection to tell the laptop that I had the screen up or down no longer worked. I couldn't even power it up. I had to take an ink pen and push the connector through the female end to indicate to the motherboard that I'd opened the screen before it would even turn on.

It appears that the same type of mechanism is built into the long BAR under the screen of the NV52 and somehow it can't determine when the screen is open or closed. If it detects that the screen has not been opened, it won't power up. This safeguard prevents the laptop from being turned on mistakenly while closed up in your laptop bag. Extending the screen back resets the mechanism and it should turn on. Sorry for the long explanation...

Seems to be a problem of not enough power.

First check the voltage output of the charger(adapter) and match it with its specs.

Also try to reset the hardware using the following steps:

1 Disconnect battery and the charger
2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4 Reconnect battery and charger and try to start by pressing the power button.

The light on indicating the there is a power going true ,but if you remove the battery pack and use the ac no lights at all it will even come on.

Several brands of laptops detect whether the battery is installed and actually cannot turn on with only the AC adapter. Are you having trouble running with the battery installed? If so, please specify what problem you are experiencing.

My new gateway 537nv will not turn on with or without the battery nor plugged into an outlet. The on light blinks 5 times and then goes out when plugged into the outlet. How do I turn it on?

If this is the case, i hope there is a problem in the power supply section. Go to the service center, & replace the Power supply of the laptop & try.

My nv5378u does not turn on, all i get is the battery light blinks 5 times. help please.

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
4. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced.
