Not all disks reflect the laser beam the same. If the lens is of lower quality then some light will be lost passing thru it. If on top of that the disk is less reflecting then the return laser light might not be enough to trigger the sensor - the disk is not recognized. If you were unlucky enough to buy a unit with a less than perfect lens then it's normal that even a very small amount of dust will have a big impact on the readability of the disks.
Sorry, manufacturing defect, there is nothing anyone can do. Use it as is or you will have to buy a new one.

My dvd won't play. every dvd i put in, it says bad disc. the vcr works fine. is it time for a new system. i tried a head cleaner and it says bad disc

Hello,
Not necessarily time for a new one. I would give the DVD player a good cleaning before you consider a new unit. A good cleaning disk with some little bristles on it. Run it through three full times. DVD players are far more sensitive than VCRs and have to be cleaned even two weeks or so. When they get real dirty it can take some fooling with to get the DVD player to even accept the cleaning disk. But if it just won't accept the cleaning disk and you can't watch a DVD in it then it's time for a new one. I had a DVD player one time that took an hour of fooling around with before it got cleaned good enough to play DVDs. Worked for a couple years afterward.

Dvd player says no disk when inserted even after cleaning

Hi, the optical unit in your combo needs to be replaced, unless the cleaning disk has not been tried enough. Perhaps it's time to have it cleaned professionally. Try the cleaning disc several times and see if you are able to get the disc to load, one idea for you, try an audio disc and see if it reads it(loads it) if it does play it then for sure you have to replace the optical(the dvd side of the unit is inefficient).

DVD shows ''UNKNOWN DISC'' and came out

This is due to you trying to use the wrong type of DVD. refer to the manual for your system to see what ypes of disc it will accept. There are also many cheap DVD disks on the market that will not operate in vertain DVD systems. These are mainly cheap disks that have been made to a low quality standard. Also there are many systems that do not like certain manufacturers disks, typically Ricoh and others.

Denon dvd player freezes in the same place on certain dvd's also sometimes willnot start to play disc unless re-inserted several times. Model D-M51DVS

sounds like its stoping during layer switch, if the player is old its needs to be cleaned. its best to clean it once every 20hrs or so. if you do not have a disk cleaner you should go buy one first. if the player is new return it and get the best dvd player you can buy for any amount the toshiba xde. this player is phenomenal, the best you will be amazed. no i dont work for toshiba but ever since they started making hd dvd players(i know they stopped)there players have become the best. trust me if you dont think so just return it. no harm done. if you want a blu-ray get ps3 I dont like them either but i have to admit after buying (for movies only)my third blu-ray player it is by far the best one. almost as good as the toshiba on standard dvd playback but not quite. good luck.

"No Disc"

"No Disc" also means "I can't read the Disc". The laser must be able to read the disc or you'll get that. There are several reasons:

Bad or noncompatible Disc: Some units won't play certain types of recorded discs. Try a rental or bought DVD.

Dirty laser lens: Either try a cleaning disc, or GENTLY clean the lens with a moistened Q-Tip.

Defective components like laser, spin motor, tracking motor, etc. Usually requires professional servicing.

Hope that helps...
