Usually when these devices start to have such problems as poor recording or no recording at all it usually is as a result of lack of servicing. Get the unit serviced and cleaned properly by am expert this should sort the recording problem. Unless the problem is a specific recurrent one then do please send me the details of the problem so i can give more specific diagnostics.

How do i shut off recoreding

The same button you pressed to start the recording, must be pressed to stop the recording.
If the camera acts strange, you first have to look if the memory access light is burning or flashing. As long as this light is on or flashing you are not allowed to remove the battery. Only try switching off the camera, When the memory access light stopped burning or flashing, you eventually can remove the battery, to stop the camera acting in a strange way.
When you have had a problem with the camera, switch it off, and then remove the battery for a short time. Then reinsert the battery.
If your camera is switched on, you can change the shooting mode, by tapping the back panel (screen) and go to the logo's you see, to change it from recording video to taking pictures.
All details about your camera you can find in the manual. All Nikon manuals are online with Nikon USA.

How do i shut off the recoreding

This is an odd question. I think you mean, how do I stop recording a video, so I can take pictures. After you switched on the camera, you press the shooting mode button (camera logo). then on the left of the display you see four logos. Your camera is on the forth logo from the top (FilmCamera logo)
Tap on the display, on the top (camera) logo, to enter the picture taking mode.
It is all in the manual on page 26.
When you get more experienced, the same screen can guide you on to more complex modes, so you also can improve pictures when you meet extreme situations. In the auto mode 99 percent of the shots will be good.
