Fridge doesnt stay cold. Freezer compartment is working fine. Fridge keeps losing its ability to stay cold. If we turn off at wall for 24 hours and then turn back on, it is fine for approx another week. Unit is about 4 years old

Leaving the freezer door open for extended period of time could have caused the evaporator to freeze up and prevent cold air being driven into refrig compartment. Unplugging it for 24 hours will give it a great chance to unfreeze. You can also check the freezer temps before you do this - bet they are no where close to the ideal of zero degrees since the ice buildup is an insulator and prevents the freezer compartment from going down to the correct temps. And if the freezer is not at least 10 degrees or less your ice maker, if you have one, will not work since it has a thermostat that only cycles the ice maker at 10 degrees or less.

Is the fan in freezer compartment working? Is the damper fully open to allow cold freezer air into fridge section?

Hi, This will happen if you have a faulty defrost timer or the the heater is not working when it goes into defrost. The reason its not so cold after a week or so because the ice builds up & doesnt run efficently which is why when you switch it off & defrost it works great.

I think it's the freezer fan that stopped working,open the freezer and see if it goes you should hear it running and even see.This fan allows the cold air into the fridge compartment,without it it takes ages for the fridge to get cold.I've got the same problem if you find the motor online let me know on [email protected]

i take it the unit is frost free you need to replace the defrost element in the freezer whats happening is your freezer sends cold air through small holes to the fridge compartment but when the freezer cant self defrost those holes freeze over thus no cold air into the fridge compartment get a tech in to check the element shoulnt cost more than $ 80.00

Nine out of ten times it turns out to be a defrost issue. What most people dont understand is the refrigerator gets its cool air from the freezer. If the evaporator coil in the freezer becomes a block of ice then the airflow from freezer to fridge section is blocked. The block of ice along with already frozen foods in the freezer compartment help to keep those foods frozen. Therefore you assume the freezer section is fine. However, the lack of cool airflow to the fridge side quickly turns that 38 degree air into 50 degree air. You could try unplugging the fridge and leaving doors open for 24 hours, this will thatw the evap coil. Plug it back in after the 24 hours, and within 12-24 hrs everything should be cool. If the fridge continutes to cool for about 3-6 days and then fails again, you certainly have a defrost problem. This is long winded, but hope it helps

Manufacturers suggest that it takes approximately 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize in both your freezer and fresh food compartments after being turned off for an extended period of time. Adjust temperature settings to the "half-way" mark for both freezer and fresh food compartments. Allow a period overnight and recheck the temperatures. Also check the condenser coil (usually located underneath the appliance). If clogged with dirt/lint, it needs to be cleaned (carefully) with a condenser coil brush (can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe's). Prior to cleaning condenser coil, turn off appliance (there is a condenser fan motor and blade operating while on). Be careful not to damage copper tubing (refrigerant in tubing)!

Firstly turn you temperature setting to the MIDDLE in between cold and coldest. This will allow cold air coming from your freezer to go into your fridge. if this does not seem to change your problem, check to see if the air vent at the back, top of the fridge is allowing air to flow from the freezer to the fridge. if there is no air flowing there may be a clogged ice drain or pan. usually if this is clogged you can unplug your fridge for 24 hours with the doors open. and it will manually melt the ice buid up.hope this helps

Had a similar problem with my Kenwood Fridge Freezer
If you're mechanically minded you could check if there's an opening and motorised flap (usually behind a cover) at the top of the fridge - Cold air from the freezer enters the fridge through this flap) The Sound you heard could have been the motor trying to open / close this flap. This flap can become frozen in the closed position - so cold air is unable to enter the fridge compartment) My fix was to thaw it with a hairdryer and reassemble. Another fix would be to empty the freezer and open the doors - it might take more than 24 hours but once completely defrosted if the flap is the issue it will have defrosted. Once plugged in again the door will open and cold air will start to flow into the fridge compartment. I had a quote for €195 for a call out / repair

Here's what I did, I defrosted! I found out that the fridge temp is monitored and maintained by the freezer. Because we had a power outage one night, my freezer thawed while we all slept and then when power came back on, freezer re-froze but this cause an ice build up on the vent on the back wall of the freezer. Well, ice must have been in one (or more) vents, causing blocked air flow in my top half of the refrigerator. I turned the dial in the freezer to "off" which also shuts down power to the fridge half. I then unplugged the refrigerator, hauled all my food items into coolers, opened the freezer door and refrigerator doors and left them open for a little over six hours. I took advantage of this empty fridge and freezer and wiped everything down. After this time frame passed, I plugged the fridge back in, turned the freezer dial to my preferred freezer temp, and wah-lah! Within two hours I had a cold fridge and solid ice cubes in the freezer. I then put all my food items back into their appropriate compartments, and went to work. Bear in mind, a total 24-hour period is needed for the fridge to re-set itself, but still, after two hours the fridge was noticeably cold. Who knew, besides our parents' generation: DEFROST!
