You have just found out why the plasma sets are fading from the market.
Both of you may have a power supply problem. The PS in plasma TVs is more complex than in LCD sets and therefore more likely to fail.
Since Akai is so poor on product support, they may not even have parts since that set was made by Samsung who also doesn't want to hear anything about them (their site doesn't recognize the Akai model number), you may be out of luck.
In researching Akai, I find large number of folks who will not buy any Akai anythings again.
This kind of performance is unusual for a Japanese company.
the pwr supply board has the AC PLUG going straight to it!...and yes it has a transformer...and fairly large capacitors....but so does the x-board...and the y-board on a plasma
