My Sony PCM-D1 recorder recently behaves erratically by sometimes failing to record on both channels using its built-in microphones.

I'd contact the service beforehand. If you think, that that behaviour was due to a software, ie. firmware issue, google for Sony PCM-D1 service manual. I wouldn't precisely describe the procedure, but generally a some ten-click-sequence is required for entering the service mode which allows for factory resetting the recorder. I don't think that the reset procedure can harm the device, but for example, if one attempts to reflash the firmware and the prodedure fails - due to power problems, for example but also due to other things which could happen - then the PCM-D1 could be regarded as busted. The repair includes qualified service with SMD repair facilities and a new board to replace that failed one. Therefore such a complicated service mode sequence, just as a precaution I think.

All the best,

I have a Toshiba Laptop PC. It is a Satellite Pro L300 Series. I wonder if it has a built in microphone so that I can add a voice/music clip to my power point slides. I do not have a separate...

Most laptops do have Microphones built in. I do not know for definate that your laptop does, but you can easily test it to find out.

1. Go to the volume control (double click the speaker icon near the clock on the taskbar), go to recording properties and select microphone as the recording source and set the slider to about 80%.

2. Bring up microsoft sound recorder (its in the start menu somewhere) and click record... when you speak you should see a voice print appear in the sound recorder window.

If you do not see a voiceprint, then you probably dont have a built in microphone, but if you do see a voiceprint as you speak then you do have a microphone built in and you can record into your powerpoint shows to your hearts content.

Hope this helps!

How do i record from both speakers?, my vocals are only coming out from the left side.

The G-Track is a mono-microphone, but your computer recognizes it as a 2 channel device because of the input connector on the side. You need to go into your computer's sound control panel, locate the G-Track microphone and change it to a 1 channel device. Alternatively, you can use advanced recording software to take the left channel input and manipulate it however you want.

Recording problem

As the built-in mic is probably the weak link I would suggest getting a external one with a built-in preamp and output control. Or a separate preamp with microphone. If you want to make good quality recordings using the highest sampling rates you should go for a better microphone.

Samson G-track

It's supposed to only record on the left side. When it's in "INST/MIC" mode the left channel has your mic on it and the right channel has your instrument, so you can mix them separately. Just configure your recording software to put the left channel on one track and the right channel on another track.
