The drum will not turn, I think the belt broke. How do I open it to find out.

it could be the belt or it could be the drive motor.
you will need to open it to see if the belt has broke or if its slipping.

belt probably broke and tangled around motor --will need to open rear panel to see if belt broken or popped pulley

that is the motor,try this,open the door,push the door switch in with one hand and spin the drum with the other hand while someone else pushes the start button,if by moving the drum the motor does start to run the motor is bad,also you have the neptune style maytag and i don't think there's a belt switch in the model so if the belt broke it could be jammed in the motor,try spinning the drum to help it start if that doesn't work unplug the dryer,open the door,remove the two screws that hold the door on and then remove the other two screws on the opposite side,grab the top of the front panel and pull forwards to remove the front panel,you can leave the door on or lift it up and pull out to remove the door,now look to see if the belt broke,if the belt is rapped around the center of the drum then it isn't broke and it will be the motor,that's a good dryer and worth changing the motor on it.

if you cant see a belt about 1/4" wide around the drum, there will be a mark where the belt was on the drum before it broke,remove front panel and restring belt around the drum,then replace front drum piece that holds the drum in place and then string belt around idler and motor pulleys and replace front cover

Most likely the belt broke, replace the belt

remove top cover and then front to reveal drum and belt,to repl belt lift up drum and install belt around drum and then on mtr and idler pulley then reinstall frt and top cvrs

the belt has broke or come off and the squiling was the nilion pads the drum runs on are worn out

try a new belt stretched belts will cause this problem if that's not it then i think your motor is getting weak too weak to turn the full drum

To replace it won't be hard. Just make sure it is back on securely.

I dont think you broke the belt, I think it may have just come off the belt tensioner. Take the bottom of the back panel off and I think you will see it hanging in there. Just put er back on.
