I would suggest that you shut water supply off to your toilet ,disconnect supply line from tank and pull toilet back up. Get a new wax base seal prefreablly a double thick wax type and after cleaning outlet on your toilet reset it on new ring.. Make sure when you tighten retaining nuts that you do so evenly. What I do is carefully center toilet on ring with ring already set in drain flange with bolts in place. Set toilet down on base and push gently from side to side to get bolts thru far enough to get plastic washer and retaing washer and nut on bolts. Carefully tighten bolts going from one side to the other say three turns on each side. Tighten securely, then set on toliet faceing wall and gently rock back and forth, front to back and side to side to help set toilet base in seal. Recheck tightness of nuts and snug up a little if needed. Be careful as the base will break if you overtighten the nuts. Reattach supply ,turn on water and check out. You should be able to get a double thick wax seal at most hardware stores. Good luck. Thanks
We tried this and it didn't work. In fact when the toilet was being very carefully removed, it shattered into pieces - however around the bolts was still very much intact. Thankfully Lowe's was so gracious to us when we showed up with our broken toilet. We bought a jumbo wax ring to use instead of the double-ring we already had at home. We were too afraid to install the new toilet, especially when there will be more renovations down the road so we hauled in the old toilet and installed it instead. No shattering thankfully. Unfortunately the wretched smell is still there!! And we used the double-wax ring! Anymore suggestions? Honestly, we did not have this smell problem before! (again, much appreciation to Lowe's and their great staff!)
Sorry to hear you are still having problems. I would check all other drains in the area and make sure you don't have a trap that is low on water and is allowing septic smell to get thru. Also if you have cast iron drain and vent pipes you may have one that has a crack in it. About the only other thing I can think of right off is if you have been doing any remodeling it's possible if you have plastic pipe that you could have hit a vent line with a nail or screw. If I can think of any other things to check I will get back to you. Thank you.
