Use the camera function on your cell phone; take picture of all cable connections
disconnect all cables to your computer
disconnect thumbscrews/screws holding computer cabinet shell at the back of computer
slide the cabinet shell forward exposing chasis frame. Lay computer on its side

important: Ground your body to the chassis frame (prevents static discharge damage)

Locate harddrive; with a magic marker ink one side to each of the two plugs and their sockets that are connected to the hard drive.(take picture maybe easer)
This is called making withness marks; it gives you a reference and orientation when you put things back together; the smaller plug is the power plug; the larger plug is for data.

Remove screws that secure harddrive to frame; Ground new harddrive to chasis; replace harddrive.

After reinstalling the hard drive re-run the diagnostics if you receive the same error code Contact Us.
Run the Drive Self Test (DST) from the Utility Partition also known as the 32 bit diagnostics to determine if the previous error has been corrected. Hard disk faulty how to replace

The online guide is here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/7994162/Compaq-Presario-M2000-Maintenance-and-Service-Guide
I would go to (page 2-5 of the manual above) first and run a Hard Drive test from the Tools menu, before replacing.

Then go to replacement procedures (Page 5-7 of the manual) and it will instruct you, it is very simple, usually taking out two screws, removing the caddy (plastic holder). You then unscrew the old hard drive from the caddy (four screws) and then screw in the new hard drive (four again), slide it in, screw the caddy in (two screws) and voila', your new hard drive is installed.
This does NOT include instructions on how to backup your files, re-install your software or anything OTHER than replacing the physical hard drive.
You will need to format the new drive and install an operating system and software.
If you need further instructions, please ask.

How do I remove my hard drive from my Toshiba Satellite R15-S829?

READ THIS ALL THE WAY THROUGH. REMOVE THE BATTERY AND POWER BEFORE ANY WORK IS DONE. HAVE ALREADY BACKED UP ALL YOUR DATA.

Toshiba Support Site warns not to try this at home.

User's Manual does not list HD removal.

That being said.....
this is the instructions for a P15-S479, but may be what you need.

Instructions:
The hard drive is located under the CD/DVD drive. Before you start taking apart the laptop, remove the battery and unplug the AC power.
1. You have to remove the CD/DVD drive. Turn the laptop over. Remove one screw right above the dive and slide the drive out of the laptop.
2. When the CD/DVD drive is removed, you’ll see a metal plate. The metal plate is secured by 4 screws. Remove them and lift up the plate from the bay. The hard drive is located right under the plate.
3. After you remove the plate, you’ll see the hard drive. The hard drive also secured by 4 screws. Remove the screws, slide the hard dire to disconnect it from the connector on the moterboard and lift it up.
4. You have to transfer the brackets from the old hard drive to a new hard drive. Also, if there is a foil shielding around the old hard drive, you’ll have to transfer it to a new hard drive too.
Here’s a disassembly guide with pictures: Toshiba Satellite P10/P15 laptops. How to remove the hard drive.

Remember the precautions and warranty information from Toshiba before you start. Try to have someone who is really into laptops before you begin

Good luck

ps: Other laptops have their HD's under the keyboard, or in a removable door on the bottom.

Need service manual or instructions on replacing hard drive on a Sony Viao VGN-ns135e or Sony VGN-NS100 Series Laptop

The hard drive is inside of the laptop and not accessible from the outside. The way to get to the hard drive is to take out all the screws from the bottom of the laptop, take the keyboard out and there may be some screws there that need to be removed. The dvd drive needs to come out and where the dvd drive normally is, check for screws there.

At this point you can remove the top cover assembly and you will see the hard drive. Remove the screws that are holding the hard drive in place and then it will come out.

Hard drive needs to be replaced

Before you do any of this make sure your notebook is unplugged and the battery is removed.

The hard drive bay is on the bottom of the notebook, there are 2 panels on the bottom of your notebook. The smaller panel, near the front of the notebook there should be a "rubber square" on the top of the panel, is where the hard drive is located, unscrew that panel and remove it then you will be able to remove the hard drive.
