Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
Before going further; try a hard reset first. If it does not help you, replace the main digital board. There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here.

SOURCE: verticle lines for picture

You need to describe these lines better. Are they moving or stationary? Are they very fine lines with sharp edges or are they more like bands with soft edges? How many lines do you see, and how wide are they (compared to the screen width)?

Fine lines that are stationary: defect in the electronics causing a vertical row of pixels to be dead or stuck. Can only be fixed by replacing major parts.

Broad lines with soft edges that move: could be electrical "hum" interference. Make sure you are using a grounded (3-pin) power plug, and that the outlet is properly wired. (Take the TV to a another location and see if the problem goes away).

Make sure you don't have fluorescent light fixtures nearby--they can interfere with the picture if the bulbs or ballast is defective. Could mean tecon board or display is bad which means replacing both in a sony if they are bad i recomend buying a new tv because it is not cost effective to replace these.

On my Sony Bravia KLV-S40A TV I have a message "VIDEO 1". How do I get it off the screen?

On the original SONY remote press display to remove that---if left on long enough it will actually burn that image into the screen--button on almost any Sony Tv remote will remove or clear it.

My Sony TV only powers up if I unplug H2

Sounds like you are in the right direction. Replace the board, but if your supplyer will not restock the part if not needed I would find a supplier that will.

Hi , on my Sony Bravia it states "Calble " with an icon in Black in the top left of the TV screen when watching SKY. Is there anyway of getting rid of this text or icon? Thanks Nick

Hi,
Press Info/ Display button on tv remote once, on-screen display will disappear.
Only Sony tv remote will work for that, no other universal remote will close on-screen display.
Thanks.

I have a sony bravia xbr 32 inch and the picture is only on half the screen

It is possible that Twin Picture function is enabled, turn it off with remote/ menu options.
If this is not the case then T-Con board sounds bad and needs to be tested/ replaced.
Qualified tv tech will test and replace it.
Thanks.

'sat' staying on top right hand corner of screen while watching tv

Generally any messages like this are generated either bybthe TV or the signal source. If it is the TV then look for the "display" button on the original TV remote to remove this.
