I am having the same problem. The heater was working fine and then one day when I turned off my pump to clean the screen, the heater did not fire up when ai turned the pump back on. I checked the pilot light and found it not lit. I have tried lighting it several times but everytime I release the control valve knob the pilot light goes out. I am wondering how you check the thermocouple to know if it is working properly.

I have a similar problem. I have a spark, but my pilot light will not ignite at all. And I don't smell any gas. Anybody have a guess as to whether this is the gas valve or the thermocouple? Thanks!

If you have not found the problem yeat, it IS the thermocoupling( or pilot generator(same thing))
You may test by placing a multimeter on the red and white leads coming to the gas valve. you do not need to disconnect the leads first but you can

We have a teledyne gas furnace whose pilot won't stay lit. Any ideas?

Is this a standing pilot,or pilot always on.

If so a bad thermocouple will cause pilot to go out.

Thermocouple is a small copper tube running from the pilot light area to the gas valve. easy to replace.

It sounds like a thermocouple has gone bad. this is a very common problem with gas powered things ie; water heaters, furnaces, hot tubs. The telltale sign is when you release the pilot light button it won't stay lit. This is a safety feature and is relatively inexpensive and easy to repair.
