I’ve changed the needle and the thread and it’s still fraying and I can not see any burrs which could be causing this

Make sure top thread is feeding off the spool without snagging and you have threaded according to machine instructions. If a horizontal spool, try use a spool cap that is larger than the spool.

To test thread feed, lower presser foot and make a slow steady pull of top thread, repeat several times. It must feed smoothly without any sudden changes in tension. See the following singer video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7N4XaIV6ms

If its not a top thread feed/tension issue then likely its bobbin, hook, or race problem. Clean and lube the hook, race and bobbin area according to manufacturer instructions. Make sure the edges of the bobbin are smooth and bobbin is not cracked (if plastic). If you recently broke a needle, check hook, race, and bobbin case for damage. Make sure the hook is not barbed or severely worn.

My se400 works great most of the time. Perfect stitches and than jams, material won’t move. Remove it and starts again goes for a while than, jams

Be sure to clean the bobbin/hook area (including the feed dogs) frequently. Sometimes, the thread will pick up junk and cause a jam.

Hand wheel wont turn to raise needle.

If handwheel does not turn, you may have thread jammed in the hook. First try to force the handwheel BACKWARDS to try to force thread back out of hook. If handwheel turns, look around hook area and you will probably see a small piece of thread. Remove it with tweezers. To help eliminate this from happening, be sure to hold the needle thread when starting off.

I have a husquavarna 875. the thread is jamming in behind the bobbin. i have re threaded, changed the bobbin and cleaned the bobbin area of any lint or thread. any ideas?

Is the top thread coming down in the rotary hook and then jamming? if so, review the top tension and top threading and see if you've missed a thread eye somewhere, particularly the thread take up lever or if the thread is actually under enough tension on top.

You can test the top tension by lower the pressure foot and then pulling the thread downwards after its feed through the tension device, it should feel firm but give to a firm tug.

If this isn't happening, try rethreading it, cleaning it out and adjusting top tension to get it firmer. Generally 4 is a good setting so just make sure it hasn't been adjusted inadvertently.

There is also good trouble shooting help at http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing%20Machine%20Troubleshooting.htm which may help you to identify what's causing this problem. Check also that the bobbin is the correct one for your machine, and in and rotating in the right direction. But if it is the top thread jamming into the bobbin race its probably top tension.

"Please check hook system" ?

clean out rotary hook area following manual instructions on how to do this, usually removing bobbin holder and bobbin, then the rotary hook area by undoing the latches each side.

Could be a thread jamming in there causing the error message.

I have threaded the machine according to the manual and everytime I go to sew something the thread from the top gets all tangled up underneath where the lower bobbin is stored and causes it to jam up.

Sounds like the top thread is not under tension, check the tension dial is working. Usually thread issues on the bottom originate from top tension problems.

Lower the pressure foot and pull the top thread in the thread path after the tension discs - should be firm and resist pulling.

If not, check threading again and pull the thread in between the tension discs to get into tension - sometimes turning down to zero, threading, then turning up to 5 (or your usual tension setting) will do the trick.

But if not, the tension discs might need a clean/service or could be faulting. You can try cleaning yourself (might be in your manual) by turning to zero, then running the selvage edge of a clean piece of waste thin cotton fabric between the discs (like flossing) and see what comes out. However, some machines the discs are not so easy to access and clean, check your manual and see if instructions are given to clean them.

Other possibility is that something in the bobbin hook area is catching the top thread and causing the thread jam up, again, clean this area, and check the needle plate for any sharp edges underneath around the hole where the needle goes in, see if something has been damaged down here.

Lastly, check that the bobbin is in the bobbin case the right way and rotating in the right direction.

Your manual may also give you some trouble shooting advice but I find 80% of the time, its tension, bobbin winding/threading, top threading, or dodgy needles causing the problems.

Jams up when attempting to sew, making loud noise. Thread mass under fabric when able to cut loose from machine.

Thread jams underneath usually are caused by top thread tension issues. Things to check:
top tension discs are clean and no thread traces caught in there, tension is set to medium number usually 4 or 5 and that the top thread is running freely from the thread spool, correctly thread through the tension discs, and down to the needle. Lower the pressure foot and pull the thread from just above the needle; it should feel firm resistance if under tension correctly.

As you've had a good jam up, good idea to now remove the bobbin, needle plate and bobbin holder (refer to your manual if you have never done this before) and clean out the hook area well, look for any fine thread remants and brush out any lint etc. Oil the rotary hook area as per your manual. Now reassemble, and rethread everything again checking that the bobbin thread is clicked into the tension spring and that the top thread is through the tension discs correctly.

Also, pop in a new needle, flat shank to the back, then try again.

Good luck with your machine.

The thread hangs up inside the bobbin holder

A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in the hook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towards you (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. *Always turn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you (clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam your machine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position before you start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam your machine in the bobbin case.

Sears Kenmore 1168280 (Old machine not used much)

Untangle any mess under and around the needleplate very gingerly trimming threads as you go if necessary....remove and clear.

Undo the needle clamp and remove the remains of the needle.

Open the door for the bobbin and bobbin case and undo the clips holding the hook in place......don't force anything, just ease any tangle loose slowly.

You may want to take a photo of how it goes back together if unfamiliar, or lay the bits out sensibly, so you can replace easily later.

Inside the bobbin/hook area is the most likely region for thread jamming the motion of everything, so make sure all is clear and clean, then.......

Without replacing the bobbin or hook, test the handwheel after cleaning before re-assembly.

You may also want to check the take-up crank for thread jams........the small arm in the top cover that moves up/down to "take-up" the top thread has a cam attached to the top shaft and often tangles thread around the shaft, open the L side cover to access.......remove thread by unwinding handwheel manually ....again be patient and careful not to break threads.
