How to resolve Sad face icon issue for click wheel iPod's

If you are seeing a sad face Icon on your click wheel iPod, you may be able to resolve the issue by following the instructions below.
What you will need:
iPod
USB cable
USB power apple iPod compatible wall adapter
The latest version of iTunes installed on your computer

The process remains the same for Mac and PC

First you will need to force your iPod into disk mode. To do this you will need to reset the iPod by pressing and holding both the menu and center buttons. Continue to do this for at least ten seconds or until the apple icon appears. (Note: You may only see a blip on the screen, continue to the next step. Keep in mind though that you may need to repeat this process once to twice to force the iPod out of the sad face status.)
As soon as you do see the apple icon, remove your fingers and switch to holding both the play and center buttons. Keep holding those until you see a check mark appear on the screen, below it will say Ok to disconnect. At this point your iPod will be in Disk mode.

Next open ITunes on your computer and plug in the USB cable to one of the ports on your computer. Now you will connect your iPod to the USB cable. In the left hand column of iTunes you will see your iPod icon; go ahead and click on that icon. In the resulting page you will see the iPod summary. Within this page you will see a Restore button. Click on that button and follow any on screen instructions. Allow the restore to complete fully. When it has you will see that the screen of your iPod will have changed. It will now be displaying a picture of a power adapter being plugged into a standard wall outlet.
Disconnect the iPod from the USB cable and connect it to the wall adapter. You almost instantly notice the screen will show a status bar that is showing that it is actually being restored to factory settings. Once that has finished the screen will light up and work as it did before the sad face icon incident.

Just as a note: If you have dropped your iPod many times, submerged it in water, or any other extreme damage has occurred; this may not work for you.
Mini Tip:
If it has been submerged in water though, you can place the iPod in a full bowl of dry rice. Completely cover and leave for at least 24 hours. I personally recommend 48 hours for best results. It is not a guaranteed resolution, but has worked for me in the past.

Sad face on screen

I just left you another thread. You already left me two unacceptable marks that I don't that are very fair to me. Especially since they were redundant.

Change them around and I might consider.

Keep in mind that repairing an Ipod isn't easy to do. It requires special tools and special parts.

Is that something youre willing to do?

Sad face apears on screen..

Plug your IPod back into ITunes. Eject it again.

If it still happens, plug your Ipod back into Itunes and restore it back to factory settings.

Then the sad face should make you happy once again.

Sad face on 80 gig cant restart

Hello,
You can try going into iPod Diagnostics
Just click and hold on the Home and Center button at the same time until the screen turns black, then click and hold on the Center button and the Rewind button (Left button) until something different than a iPod display comes out.

Hope this helps!

IPod will not start - hard drive making clicking noises

I had the same problem, took it to Apple store, they suggested I trade it in for a new one. With no other options, I opened up the ipod and found that the hard drive off center. I popped it back into place and it worked like normal after that. Opening your ipod will void the warranty. Hope this helps.
