Same thing happened to our GE XL800 last night. We were cooking something in there for like 20 minutes, the microwave got really hot, and then stopped heating food.

I can only get it to heat now when I put the vent on BEFORE starting to heat something, otherwise, it doesn't heat up.

I have similar problem as other poster.  Microwave stopped heating food on Jan 23, 2009.  It WILL heat food if you turn the vent fan on BEFORE starting the microwave.  BIZZARE!!!!  This sounds like it may be a controller board problem since I can get heat out of the magnatron.

Please reply back with your model number so we can help you.

NOTE: There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

GE Model # JVM7195SFSS microwave.

Check the internal ceramic fuse on the circuit board. Sometimes one section will work while another won't. I'm not sure if this model has a rear mounted thermal fuse, but the models with the inline thermal fuse will cause a similar issue.

JES1139 is not working properly. The round table is rotating but the food is not getting heated. What is the problem?

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.

(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side the magnetron)))

Emerson MW9111 will not heat- all timers & clock work

Normally when you take the cover off, the fuse will be on the right of the oven on the circuit board.

Does not heat

is there light in it... if its completely dead..if yes, check main fuse inside and then check lamp also...
if it is getting on but not heating then u need to check the magnatron...the source that cause heating..

goodluck......

GE XL1800 1100 Watts Microwave Spacemaker

Yes, it could be the Magnetron. If the unit is out of warranty, you can try to remove the rear cover (make sure unit is unplugged) and see if there is a blown fuse in the section that powers the Magetron. They are not too difficult to replace. MCM Electronics sells them and you can call them with your model and they can find a replacement for you will be able to see how much it will cost.
