Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW - Fabric Softener dispenser doesn't empty

I have the Neptune toploader. I've been generally satisfied with this washer despite the many problems that I've heard about from others. However, there is one thing that has never worked properly - neither the fabric softener dispenser or the bleach dispenser work properly. They are not emptying during the cycle. It doesn't appear that I can take the dispenser completely out for cleaning. Unfortunately, my washer is no longer under warranty so I'd like to correct this myself if possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Fabric dispenser does not empty out and the remaining fluid becomes very thick. I would like to know how to remove the fabric softener dispenser, both the top and bottom, for cleaning.

  • mking30157 Jun 28, 2008

I have the same problem with the fabric softener dispenser. It does not flow into the rinse water and remains in the chamber after the clothes have rinsed. I put my hand under the rubber rim just under the dispenser and there was a thick pad of softener that had stored there for apparently several and I mean several washes. I have been able to remove most of the residue but I don't know how to totally clean the dispenser as well as the area in the lid where the water dispenses into the softener. That too has a collection of the very thick deposit. Help - my model is FAV6800MM and I am unable to locate a manual for this product.

The fabric softner wont dispense- i have cleaned it, diluted the softner and even attempted dispensing just water- it remains full after the washer stops!

  • JShackelford Jan 25, 2009

Both the bleach dispenser and the fabric softener dispenser has stopped emptying properly during a wash cycle.

  • headstitcher Apr 23, 2009

bleach and softener product not being dispensed into the wash. I suspect there is no water flowing to the dispensers because now I am receiving the nf (no fill) error code. If cleaning the intake filters does not fix the problem, how do I determine if water is flowing to the dispensers? Anybody? I'm no expert so explain it like I'm a 5 year old. :) Thanks

I had a similar problem with the fab. softener chamber. Clean
out the buildup and it will drain. To do this, remove the cap and wipe out the softener. Also, be sure to wipe inside the drum, just below the dispenser.
As for a water flow to the dispenser- You will need to remove the plastic portion of the lid. Start with the detergent dispenser, then gently remove the bottom corners of the lid. Then are held by two plastic clasps. Then gently remove the "L" shaped plastic holders. Use a pipe cleaner to clean out the tube where the water flows directly out of the unit, before entering the lid. I did this last night, and it works beautifully!

Thanks for some great ideas. This worked well. Diluting the fabric softener seems to alleviate the buildup.

Try putting a couple of spoonfuls of baking soad in the dispensers, followed by straight white vinegar - you'll get a lot of fizz- that's good - it will break down the build up! You can repeat as needed. I always dilute my fabric softner with water, as well.

If you have a water hose close to the washer it helps to rinse the compartment out with the hose. My washer is in the basement near a drain and I do this. Some of my fabric softener has gotten "thick" and that causes it not to flow through. I am considering placing the softener in the microwave for a while to "melt" it and cause it to flow more easily.

Hello headstitcher
Take a look at this post its a few posts down for NF error and see if that helps. I have to leave for work soon and will check back later to see if you need help getting into service mode to turn on the cold and hot water valves. You did the right check of the water fill input screens.
Take a look at this post for the fabric and bleach dispenser. Rich

I have no water to fabric softener dispenser I

Google Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW

You can get the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual and get into Service mode and turn on the Cold Water Inlet valve and the Fabric Softer dispenser valve and see if water flows to the Softer reservoir. You may need to replace the dispenser valve.

Pic below. Post in the other forum it's easier to work the issue at a true DIY forum.

How do you remove the fabric softener insert?

See page 33 and 34 of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for Bleach/Softener Dispenser Removal.

The only place I know of to get the Service Manual is at a DIY appliance repair forum like this forum with the Sticky Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW

5th post down has a link to the FAV6800A/FAV9800A SM. Post in that forum if you need additional help and good luck.........D*ick

My fabric softener dispenser won't empty or my bleach dispenser won't empty

Peggy,

I feel the the dispenser valves are not working properly. I have post somewhere in this forum to troublshoot using Service Mode to see if the Dispenser Valves will open.

I'm a DIY owner and know the machine well. If you want repair I suggest moving to a true DIY forum and I will help.

Google this;

Appliance Repair Forums > Appliance Repair Talk > Washers > Maytag/Magic Chef/Admiral/Jenn-Air
Then repost issue if you want to DIY. If elect to call in a repair service give the Service Company the Model Number and they may ask for the Serial Number. That info is listed on the rear right hand side of the console.......D*ick

Fabric softener dispensor does not empty

For the FAV6800A or FAV9800A:

If you have no water flow to the Softener dispenser or Bleach dispenser see if you can turn the dispenser valves on Service Mode and verify water flow to the reservoirs.
Enter Service Mode (page 14 of the Service manual) by Pressing Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys (simultaneously) for three seconds or until the console beeps.

Now go to page 16 to Service Manual and enter Board Output Test by pressing the Delicates key. This will lock the lid. Now press the
Wrinkle Control Key Pad on the console. The Control Board will send 120VAC to the Fabric Softener dispenser water valve. Did you hear the solenoid hum? If so we will now need to turn on the Cold Water Inlet Valve and see if water flows to the dispenser.

Now press the Spin Only key this will turn on the Cold Water inlet valve after 5 seconds press the Off key. The washer will unlock. Check to see if water did flow to the fabric dispenser reservoir. If you heard the Fabric dispenser valve hum then most likely 120VAC was applied to the solenoid. If water did not flow then the Fabric dispenser valve is stuck closed if you heard it hum.

The Bleach/Fabric dispenser water valve is an assembly and is not repairable you have to replace.

Final technical troubleshooting as a technical owner of the machine would be to take my DVM and verify 120VAC from the Control Board to the Fabric dispenser solenoid.

See page 36 lower left hand corner is the Bleach/Softener dispenser valve.
Here is the Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

The Part Number for the Dispenser Valve is 25001043 you can order from this site or search the internet for best price try appliancezone.com…

You can remove the Fabric Softner to clean see page 33 of the Service Manual…Rich

My maytag neptune TL fabric softener cup seems to be clogged, what do I do?

If your machine is a FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW see if this post will help you. Once the Fabric Softener top is removed you can flush the dispenser and run some pipe cleaners thru the exit ports to help remove gunk build up.

If there is a water flow issue into the Fabric Softener dispenser then further investigation may need to take place. I discuss how I would start the troubleshooting for that as a possible issue.

The Service Manual for reference use and care guide has some info

Maytag neptune TL

The machine needs to cut you a break;

“”i have a maytag neptune TL and there are several things wrong with it...1. I can't wash small loads it will stop at the spin cycle and flash dc””

This issue is a clutch issue see this post to DIY the repair.

“”it will wash fine on regular loads until it comes to spin cycle again and it will stop and flash nf””

This one is a little confusing the “nf” error is a No water fill error code. Check these two post for support regarding water inlet restriction or valve not opening properly.

nf post nf post 2

“”my fabric softener dispenser will not let the softener out neither will the bleach dispenser””

See this fabric softer post for support. The fabric softener dispenser may be clogged or the water dispenser valves feeding both dispensers may not be operating properly. The Service Manual on page 16 “Board Output Test” will give you support to turn on the Fabric Softener Valve and Bleach valve. See if you hear the valves operate in Service Mode”

My method may seem a little confusion for viewing water flow to the dispensers. This issue could be associated to the nf error you are receiving, restricted water flow (inlet screen clog) or cold water valve not working properly.

Post back for any questions or possible support I can offer. I’m an owner like you not a repair person but I’m very comfortable working on this machine. Rich

Fabric softener dispenser

Siphon dispensers are always holding some water. I would check the level on the machine, not over fill with softener and if not a little water to help it down. The water supply goes to the back wall under the console and a little lower in new machines.

Fabric Softner won't dispense

fabric softener goes into the dispenser. it may be a full blown solenoid valve -or- a flapper type of solenoid valve. operation of the solenoid operates a flapper to let the softener out. go to an appliance repair site to find the solenoid - appliance parts dot com or repair clinic dot com.
