How many tons is my unit?

divide your btu rating by 12000. (1 ton = 12000 btu)
For example - a 24,000 BTU Air Conditioner is a 2 ton unit. 24000 divided by 12000 = 2
A 18000 btu air condtioner is a 1 1/2 ton unit 18000 divided by 12000 = 1 1/2
you can find out your btu rating by looking on the tag on your unit.

The unit is not cooling the room. It is only comforting when you are in direct line of it.

you need to find out the size of the unit.
Rule of thumb - for every 600 sq ft of cooling area (in a well insulated house) you will need 1 ton of air conditioning. 1 ton = 12000 btu.
So, if your cooling area is 600 sq ft you would need an AC which was rated at 12000 btu, assuming your house is well insulated.
If it is not insulated well - you might need a bigger unit, i.e. 15000 btu.

Hi i have a Maytag 12000 btu Window ac unit that

I had a similar problem with my AC last week. These newer capacitors no longer have PCBs in them. The stuff they use now just ain't as good. As a result their are more capacitor failures tan ever. I would check that. If the cap looks swolen its probably bad.6f0f1c5.jpg52ae98e.jpgYou should also try and lubricate the motor. Use HVAC oil 106f87c.jpg$2 at Ace hardware store.
You gonna have to slide out the unit a little to get to the motor. Have rags ready.
