I had this problem and needed to remove and dis-assemble the volume control and clean it with tuner cleaner. After that it worked fine.

When I turn the knob to increase the volume, it goes up to three and drops back down to zero. It does this everytime I move the knob at a normal pace or faster. However, if I push the knob slightly in and...

It could be a safety protection meaning you could have a shorted speaker check all speakers and wiring, or it could be a defective volume control, try cleaning the volume with a contact cleaner spray you can find at any good electronic store (you normally have to open the radio to reach the POTENTIOMETER/VOLUME) to be able to spray inside it, than alternate (high/low) the control repetively to move/clean the volume's circuitry

Good luck!

Volume problem with VSX-D409

Had the same problem. I had to replace the volume contol. It was inside the receiver behind the knob. It has a part# on it. Mine was part# AWX7386 (control assembly) from Pioneer.com. If you can figure out how to open the case than you can change this piece. Good luck

VOLUME CONTROL PROBLEM.

If the volume control can be turned continuously in either direction (no stopping), then the control is what is called an encoder and the behavior you are describing is an internal logic failure. If the control has an upper and lower limit (only turns so far), then it is a standard volume control and is physically broken and needs to be replaced. In either case, the unit should be under warranty. Return it to Best Buy for repair. Given that it just came out of the box, talk to a manager and request an exchange.

Volume

the volume control needs to be cleaned. this control is a step switch basicly. and the switch contacts are not making proper contact. cleaning this requires dis-assembly and desoldering so if you are inclined to do this work happy fixing if not it shouldn't cost much to fix.

It has lost partially the mechanical connection between the volume control knob and the volume control pot.

The knob could be "stripped". A drop of a slightly resilient glue should do the trick. Do not use rigid adhesives, as this will prevent future service to this area of your receiver....accordianman

Volume

Hi,
This sounds like a case of a dirty/defective rotary encoder. The volume control used here is not the conventional potentiometer type , but a rotary set of switches that tell the sytem if the knob is being turned left ot right.
Do you think you'd be able to open the unit and spray some contact cleaner into the rotary encoder? It might involve dis-assembling it down to front bezel removal.
