So, once I create a new account while in safe mode, reboot to enter in the code you gave me to access my old files? I'm using Vista and it confuses the hell out of me. Where should I enter that code in at? Thanks so much for your response!
Vista has so many quirks, and unlike xp...you resetting or ceating a new user account is not easy if you can't login as an administrator.
If you forget the administrator password and don't have a password reset disk or another administrator account, you won't be able to reset the password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won't be able to log on to Windows and will need to re-install Windows.
All you have to do is reboot then. sorry I am not a total expert at vista because I have been waiting for the quirks to get worked out I do not like unstable systems. I believe you can find user data at your root drive so it should b C:\Users\ Let me know. Thanks, Lee

You can salvage your old user account by logging on as the "Administrator" user. Once you're
logged in as the admin, you can reset your old user password. The Administrator user (by default) is similar to a "superuser" and has the highest access level to reset any user password.
If you don't know what your Administrator password is, you can reset that by rebooting into Safe Mode.
The best option here is to reset your account password. You can do this using either 1 of the 2 methods suggested by Microsoft Knowledge Base article #321305. In my opinion, the second method described on this page is most likely the easiest route:
Reboot Windows in Safe Mode.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK: control userpasswords2
Click the user account that you forgot the password for, and then click Reset Password.
Type a new password in both the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and then click OK.
Good luck!
Side note: To access Safe Mode, Click Start -> Shutdown (or Turn Off), and choose 'Restart'. Once the computer restarts, press F8 repeatedly on the keyboard until a Boot Menu appear (this *must* be done before the Windows boot screen appears). Finally, choose to boot Windows in Safe Mode and press Enter on the keyboard.
You can reset a lost or "forgot Windows password" with 4 methods below:
1. Another valid administrator account which can normally log on.
2. A password reset disk or a repair disc, which is created in advance ( before you lost password ).
3. Third-party software to create a bootable password reset CD/DVD or USB, like "Windows Password Breaker".
4. Re-install. Will lose data.
Try booting into Safe mode, if you can get in, (using win xp), go to control panel / user accounts/ craete new account. Set as admin. Reboot and open with new account, you can then access the old account to change the password
Or delete the old account and SAVE the files for that account
Hi There,
Note: Below steps are for win 7, vista and if you are user any other operating system like win 10,win 8 then mention in next post.
The best and easy method I will suggest you to activate your windows hidden admin account and for that follow the below steps:-
Boot your computer into safe mode with networking
Shutdown the system>>press power button to reboot and immediately start pressing f8(for win7,vista)>>go to safe mode with command prompt>>run below command
Net user administrator /active:yes
Hit Enter and you should see a message that says, "The command completed successfully".
reboot to new admin account and copy your old your account data into admin account or create a new user admin account and copy data.
if this does not work than revert back, I will be happy to assist you.
The easiest way is to do a Repair install and during it to reset the admin password: shortly after the Copying Files stage ends the pc reboot and will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted. When you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. A command console will now open up giving you access to your system. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter to access your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer.
What version of Windows are you using? (XP, Vista or Windows 7)
Try creating a new user account by going into the control panel and selecting "User Accounts". Create a test user account and try removing the software from the new account.
If that fails reboot the system in safe mode. Reboot the PC and then just before you see the Windows load screen press F8 a few times and you should see the option to boot into safe mode.
Once you are booted into safe mode it should take you to a screen where you are able to login as a hidden admin account (depending on which version of Windows you are using) and then try removing the software.

After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you
login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re
good to go again!
To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow key to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key. Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.
select safe mode.
Login to administrator .
if you are able to login then try to remove your user password this way
go to control panel > user account > select your user account and click on remove password.
