I had the same kind of problem with my 32GB Transcend USB Flash drive. I tried all the things I found in the internet (Apacer software, Registry fixes, Kingston software, HP Flash Disk software, you name it!) but nothing worked. Always I got Write protected error. Finally I found the program called MiniRMATool which solved the problem. Search MiniRMATool_XP2K_v1.rar in Google, run it and then you will be able to format your drive.

''Because a USB device was drawing too much power"

Try a powered USB hub. I have had this problem with a PC and even plugging two devices into a hub with its own power supply fails sometimes.

Lacie 250 GB USB drive problem

If you mean a Lacie-Porsche: Get a blade. Bottom is kept by 9 plastic clips along the long edges (5 and 4): you must insert the blade and force appart a little those lateral walls. After extracting the bottom pannel, unscrew your hdd and bend "up" (your device is upside down;-) those metal fingers. Rodeca P.S. Sorry, I'm tired and cannot write English properly.
