My hardrive is plugged into my mac, the light is on, the hardrive is spinning, but no icon shows up on my desktop. I've searched my computer, and the icon isn't anywhere. I don't know how to access it even though it seems to be working.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hi Guys, you must be getting this a lot, but i am going nuts! I have a Hitachi 5K320 250Gb Harddrive that for some reason I cant get in anymore. I have very important stuff on there that i need for my...

I know it sounds a little nuts but try it with the drive upside down or on either side or on end supported by some books, you can also try cooling it off in a fridge for a while. when a drive starts to go and starts making clicks and vibe noises you have very little time to get everything off. before you try anything make sure you have space to save the files if you do get in.
Also look into Puppy Linux it runs in ram without running the hard drive,
Puppy may be able to read your drive.

I'll check in with you later, off to work.

Regards

Back up drive is not showing up on desktop

Since you said you have been using it for years, i will first of all want you to observe the hard drive when it is connected to your computer if it makes any funny cracking sound, if it does, it means that the hard drive is bad and it cannot be repaired. But if it not making such noise, and it is spinning well, then you have to change the case connector because the panel is bad.

IMac G5 no isight. Long beep at boot then flashing white light then grey screen and ? in file icon.

hi there,

The question mark usually relates to the computer not finding a system. Usually a bad hardrive. The beep at the beginning can be faulty RAM.
I would suggest taking the computer to your closest authorised apple dealer for them to diagnose further.

Cheers

A Hard disk making noise, does not sound too good. if it was waorking before on both PC's & not having issues then it has to be with the unit. try on a nother computer. if its the same thing i suggest you look for that warranty card of yours.

Problems adding files onto the hardrive

This sounds as though the Iomega has got locked somehow.
Do a get info on its desktop icon and have a look at the lock checkbox. Also look at the write permissions while you are there.

Hard drive will not appear on Mac desktop

open up disk utility ( applications --> utilities --> disk utility )

does disk utility recognise it ?

Also if you click on the apple icon at the top left and go to about this mac --> more information

Then select the appropriate bus that it is on ie firewire or usb does it show up in system information ?

If so then it is obviously detecting it - if you can see it in disk utility it may need a reformat so maybe make a backup of the data you want on another computer and then wipe it and re do it.

If you can post back with a bit more info.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps
