First, right-click on the desktop where there are no icons and choose Display settings, may be in advanced settings, but look for supported screen resolutions.
If you pick one that is not supported, doing nothing when the screen goes wonky will automatically cause it to revert to what it was before you changed it.
One of the settings there should work for your screen.
If none work, go to your device manager and update the drivers for the display.

It's a relatively simply procedure, 1st download all of the necessary drivers for your laptop from Compaq's website under the support section. You'll want the drivers for Window's XP. Either burn these drivers to a CD or place them on a flash drive. Also if you already have documents or data on the laptop that you would like to keep you'll need to back that up as well to either a CD/DVD or a flash drive.
Next you'll need a Windows XP installer disk. Place the disk in your laptop and reboot. The system should prompt you, asking you if you'd like to boot off of the CD press any key. Hit any key and the computer should boot from the XP CD. The system will take a while as it loads up the installer shell. If the system does not boot from the CD you will need to go into the BIOS or CMOS and change the boot order for the computer to make the CDROM or DVD ROM the 1st boot device. The 1st prompt on the installer should be a license agreement, hit F8 to continue. The next steps will pretty much be up to you. Things like where you want to install windows XP, do you want to format the drive, etc. This sounds like your 1st install so you may want to leave everything as default. Windows should detect your Vista install and by default install it as a seperate installation allowing you to boot into either OS.
After the OS has prepared the hard disk and copied all files the computer will reboot and will boot into a installer kernel and will prompt you for even more selections. This process will take longer than the initial portion and most of these settings you can leave at default as well. When this part is complete the system will reboot again and your installation of XP should be complete.
When the system boots into windows it will ask you to create a user name, create a user name or multiple ones. Put in your driver CD or flash drive and proceed to restore your files and install your drivers. That's the revised version of it anyway.
Good Luck!
