  • lucus_james2 Aug 06, 2008

I have purchased on ebay a " " non working playstation 3 because it was much more affordable then buying a new one. So I installed a hard drive, which this one was a 40gig model, and then plugged this in. It was mentioned that it had no video out, so it was within my discovery this could be as simple as a monitor issue and could very easily be fixed.
This is not so much the case I think, I have used both AV cables and HDMI cables, I have tried holding down the power button for a few seconds trying to reset the video settings, but that was again a no go. I get absolutely no post. I get activity from the cd rom drive, and it does read disks, or I assume with it not having a spit out issue, or any other significent detail. I am curious is there something internally that goes on these?

I was playing Grand theft auto 4 on my ps3, when suddenly my ps3 lost its audio and video. I tryed to take the disc out of the drive, but it did the couple of beeps saying there was no disc in there. I finaly pressed it enouph times that the disc came out. At first I thought my ps3 over-heated, so i unplugged it from everything and I came back a few hours later and it still has no picture or sound, even when the little green light is on. Please help.

I have been having all sorts of problems since upgrading to the 2.4x firmware. Graphical glitches, games not booting, etc. Yes, I do upgrade the firmware everytime a new one was coming out, and am currently on 2.42 (did not fix issues I had with 2.41). Came in this morning, and the menu was frozen. Restarted. No video on HDMI, component, or RCA cables. I also get sound and no video. Nothing seems to work. Grrr.

I have a friend at playstation and when I called I had no video or audio using the AV Multi Out.
The soultion is:

1. Turn Off in back (wait few seconds for it to re-set)
2. Turn on in back
3. Turn on in front and hold your finger on it 'till it turns off again -
(you get the beep on then the three beeps for reset and it will eventually beep again and turn off)
4. Turn off in back (wait few seconds for it to re-set)
5. Turn on in back
6. Turn on in front hold finger for three beeps and damn it works!

I was so Pissed for two days and spent $80.00 on new cables (that I did not need) and the answer was so simple.. The SONY on-line troubleshooting instructions really need to be updated!

Let me know if this works for you!

Thanks
Mike M

worked for me, went from LCD to Plasma, didnt think there would be an issue, but something was different, tried what was suggested above and success !!! Thank you !!

  • souptbird Dec 12, 2010

If you have a setup problem then you are lucky. Otherwise the motherboard has to be replaced. I've run into this problem myself. Unfortunately it was not my setup. My screen went blank while watching netflix streaming. Everything but HDMI works. Really sucks because I didn't use the system much and there was no surge issue either. So much for High Def.

I almost went crazy with this! I tried everything everyone was saying and nothing worked. Finally I came across a posting that said as follows: 1. Turn off ps3 at back. 2. Turn off tv, and unplug it, wait several seconds to reset. 3. turn on tv first, make sure your input setting is set for the ps3 (you may have to quickly switch after turning on the ps3 at front) 4. turn on ps3 at back, then turn ps3 on at front, wait about 2 seconds, then press and hold ps3 button and the screen should pop up asking you about the video settings

Take any disc out. turn off the sytem by holding down the power button so just a red light is evident. Then hold down the power button which consequently switches the system on. whilst still holding down the power button you should hear another beep and the video/audio should work.

As all of these solutions sounds good I can tell you that about 50% of them will be getting to the restore menu and restoring the default settings, however; the other 50% is yet to be figured out at least on our end. Reflowing is not the answer as I have a reflow machine and it will not fix a no video/audio issue. I have had several no video/ No audio and have reflowed the entire board and nothing. Now on the YLOD reflowing in about 60-70% of the cases will work the other 30-40% is component failure and in that case you are almost certainly better off to just get another board. So I am too looking for the answer because I have a PS3 right now that I can hear the audio but it does not show video and the USB's will not sync the controllers.

I have a no audio/video. I know DAMN well how to reset the video settings and how to boot up into diagnostics screen.

THERE ARE SOME THAT HAVE NO AUDIO/VIDEO no matter what. Has anyone ever fixed one like this before?

AGAIN, i am not talking about something you can read the PS3 manual and repair, ie., holding down the power button!

I am looking for MOB specific failures...thnx

Thank you so much! Solution 5 worked great! Any idea what causes this to begin with? Just a PS3 fluke?

  • Anonymous Sep 25, 2010

Again, you are just resetting the system and it's video settings.

    I REPAIR THESE REGULARLY.

Is there anyone that repairs game consoles that has experienced a system that powers on perfectly just no audio or video at all. You can turn it off and on a million ways, hold down power buttons, boot up into diagnostic menu screens whatever, STILL NOTHING.

    Thnx

  • BURNA9 Sep 27, 2010

I have EXACTLY the same problem as txbox it seems. I can hold down the power button as long as i like and i never get the second beep.....just a wait of about a minute and the PS3 turns off. My console has been affected by a lightning storm a few days ago. All of the HDMI ports on my LCD TV are down too because of the storm.

  • Anonymous Feb 13, 2013

your GPU really needs a reball.. u can just reflow it with a hotgun or watever, reflowing isn't a permanent solution, once a BGA chip got a pin off, u need to reball it, idk how it costs there, just reflow it, it will work 100%

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2013

I have no idea how I fixed this but I guess turning it off and on and off and on and standing on your head and turning off and on and off and on and doing jumping jacks works. Thanks for the treads of input, I'm sure you guys helped but I'd like to think it was jumping jacks that solved it.

Just holding downt the touch power button wont work. You need to actually follow a few more steps after this to get to the reset screen-

  1. Hold down the power button until you hear a series of beeps- when you hear 2 very short beeps take your finger off the power button.
  2. You will be prompted to connect a controller by USB, do so now (you cannot use a wireless controller for this)
  3. A selection of 6 options will appear- choose number 3 "Restore File System". This will rebuild the OS file system on your PS3 without deleting your saved games etc. Quite often no video/picture errors are caused by a software clash or corrupted driver file.
  4. Read the following article on fixing PS3 no video and audio errors to learn more about what causes this problem and how you can get rid of it.

The problem is as follows. On the first generation of PS3 consoles - Sony in their wisdom used lead free solder to comply with WEE standards. The problem is after a while the solder cracks and the PS3 becomes faulty.
YOu need to have the PS3 officially repaired. A machine that melts the solder again. Failing this Sony will replace for 150 pounds in the uk - I would advise you do this if out of warranty - you'll end up with the new model - not PS2 compatable though the 60gb no 80gb version too. So be warned. I had it changed for 150 pounds in the end - as easier all round.

Thank you so much! I had power cycling the on/off switch several times before finding this forum with no luck. It took about 6 more tires and worked! I was about to throw it out the window! It's a slightly used unit & I thought I got a lemon.

Real solution for the 10% who have tried everything and no results. I was that 10% so here it is.
If you have done everything else, made sure all cables are properly connected, TV on the right setting, then you do this:
1. Make sure that your Ps3 is turned off in the back.
2. You must disconnect your HDMI cable and connect your Ps3 to the TV using the AV Multi out that it came with.
3. After connecting it, power the Ps3 from the back.
4. Then power up the Ps3 from the front.
Problem resolved!
What happens when you encounter this blank screen issue is that through a power surge or the sockets being unplugged from the wall, it reset your Ps3 and the connection settings. So when you power it up, it doesn't recognize that you are connecting through your HDMI. This is the last step.
5. Turn on your remote, log in.
6. Go to Display Settings
7. Video Output Settings
8. Choose HDMI Settings
Repeat steps 6-8 for Audio Settings and your done!

The 10% of you out there can just thank me when you go to bed this evening.

Ok I tried what u said but it only works on AV. Not on hdmi. I try to set the PS3 to hdmi but nothing. This all happened after a lightning storm. I also had my cable box replaced because of this. That the hdmi didn't work but the AV did. Can you please help. If something needed to be replace what part of the PS3 needs to be replace.

If you have a PS3 that is freezing up on you you can fix it from home using a good guide or you can send it in to get it fixed.

A good guide with video that shows you how to fix this problem is YLOD Repair Wizard

I had the same problem. I tried the OFF/ON method proposed above and NOthing worked for me.

In desperation, I just did a system update to the latest operating system. SHAZAM!!! the PS3 is running like new.

Its free, easy and it might work for you. Give it a try

Solution #2 worked

I have a backwards compatible 80 gb ps3. I bought it in late 2008 at walmart. So its now 2010 and it stopped working properly in July I believe it was. It doesn't video after about five or ten minutes if i turn it will freeze. I have to use my hand by holding down front button to force turn it off. Then I'll turn it off in the back then turn it back on and it won't show anything, and the system wont recognize controller. Will wait an hour and it will be fine, but the system will freeze again, sometimes with weird shapes on the screen. This cycle continues, so I don't know what to do cause it even happens on av also. Can anyone tell me what this is????????????

  • buckedu Oct 04, 2010

I took it apart, cleaned it and even put new thermal paste on but nothing changed. Tried the resetting video with the 3 beeps process: didn't work. Even called sony and of course they wanted money to fix it, 180 to fix it. My problem is very unique because if I can't see anything i cant fix anything. I can hear sound sometimes, but when screen freezes even that goes out in like 10 seconds. So my main issue is that my hdmi isn't outputting right..... No clue what this is or how to fix it.

  • PR_DEUCE Dec 03, 2010

I am currently having the same problem, i thought it might be over heating but that wasnt it. I took all the screws out of the ps3 ran it out of the case thinking it was overheating but that didnt help, so i raised the back left corner, wedged the handle of a screwdriver and placed it back in the case with the top off and bam...ps3 works. For some reason it doesnt like laying flat in the case, my guess is that there is a loose connection or a solder joint that came undone and when it sits at an angle it makes the contact. Its ugly with no top and a screw driver hanging out the back but it works.

  • 2daysago May 14, 2011

    @PR_DEUCE
Was the motherboard on when you tried this screwdriver technique? It sounds like something that could be permanently fixed if you know the specific location of the component that is not conducting electricity.
Does anybody know what component level PS3 item that might be on the motherboard? I am extremely curious at your solution. You might have inadvertently stumbled upon the beginning to a solution COUNTLESS users have been looking for. Anybody know what component that might be? Diagrams? Pictures?
    Let's get it solved!!

  • 2daysago May 14, 2011

@PR_DEUCE On second thought, I think this might be related to your CPU or GPU melting or cracking the solder joining it to the motherboard. I have seen some videos on the Tube where they repair a YLoD by reheating the CPU and GPU with a heat gun. This might help. I don't have a hat gun and so would not try this technique unless I could know for sure if a hair dryer might work as well. Hope this helps somebody.

I opened the ps3 to clean it. Powers up but no video or audio...

it sounds like you may have unplugged one of the ribbon cords in the PS3. take it back apart and check all of your connections and make sure they are all tight.

Blu ray movies do not play

Have you checked your video output for the bluray to make sure it is set properly? You should be able to set it to automatic so it will be able to set the signal at the proper level. It also wouldn't hurt to try a lens cleaner which is for the Bluray and ps3 system. (approx $25 at BestBuy)

Ps3 has no video

I would first try changing the inputs if there is an HDMI cable connected the PS3 will detect it and change the output to HDMI. Make sure when you connect any HDMI cables that the power is off on ALL Units that are using HDMI. Connect the cables then power up all units. Change TV and Receiver or Amp to correct HDMI Inputs. On the PS3 go to Display Settings over to the left of the Crossbar. Select output settings and select HDMI and everything after select AUTOMATIC! Then Set your Audio (Also use Auto) and Save by pressing X.  Good Luck!

Ps3 start up promlem

so if you have ever had your ps3 connected to HDMI (HD cable) before, and your forgot to change it back to the normal cords that came with the game (yellow, white, and red) then you will have to connect it back up to the HDMI and go to the Display Settings and change your video output to the one that came with the ps3 (which looks like just one yellow in the settings.) then after you do that then the screen might go black if your HDMI and regular cable are on a deffirent channels, so you turn to the channel that the yellow white and red cable needs to be to, then it will show the screen and ask you if you want to leave it at this setting with this video output/cable then you say yes then your good to go.

Ps3 wont show up on tv

Hey i just posted i have the same problem as you do but then I checked the SONY PS3 website and it solved my problem. Try resetting your video output. I'll paste what it says on the PS3 website but if that doesn't solve your problem go to the website. They have a bunch of troubleshooting solutions for this problem...

If while manually changing the Video Output Settings, the screen remains blank for more than 30 seconds, you may need to perform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.

  1. Make sure the Component AV Cable is connected to the [AV MULTI-OUT] port on the back of the PLAYSTATION 3 system.
  2. Connect the other end of the Component AV Cable into the video and audio RCA jacks of the TV or display monitor.
  3. While the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the system goes into standby mode again . (So the light cycle would go from: red light to --> green light --> then back to red light) This will ensure that you have held down the On/Off button long enough to reset the Video Output Settings.
  4. Turn ON the PLAYSTATION 3 and once the system finishes powering up, the Video Output Settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).
