Before i got MGS4 my ps3 was perfect. I have the 60 gig model. After 2hours of MGS4 i get a picture of a CD with a question mark on it in theupper left hand corner and the game freezes. I reset it a bunch oftimes hoping to fix the problem, nothing! Called SCEA for support, theytold me to reset all ps3 settings. I did and everything worked fineagain for 3 hours and MGS4 crashed again. Now no PS3 game works formore then 15 minutes. No blue ray disc plays at all. Ps2/Ps1 games andregular DVD's + psn content off the HDD works fine. Any one elseexperience this? how is this fixed? Is my blue ray drive out of whack?WTF?! Please help.

Ok there are a few ways ti fix this...turn off your console and switch back on so its in standby mode "red light on" then push the power button and hold it down till you hear a beep and it turns off then swith it back on and this will have reset it back to factory settings.....let me now if that dose not work
Put the disc in ur bunsssss then put it in the ps3
I have a 40 GB PS3 and in act5 outer haven snake got killed a lot of times so i continued game and when i pressed on continue a small icon of disc and ? appears on top left side of tv for only 1 or 2 secs. but my game otherwise works fine. i also have uncharted and it also works fine.
My suggestion to all that use ps3 only for ps3 bly-ray games and bly ray movies (dont play any kind of dvd) this will save laser lens.
I have the same problem. MGS4 worked fine for the first few hours of play I built up over several days. Then it just locked up. I reset it and then it gave the disc read error with the small disc ? icon flashing in the top left corner. GTA4 then began to freeze as well as all my other games. Even playing just PSN downloads and using the web browser causes the system to randomly lock up. I called Sony, they offered to fix it for $150 since it was out of warranty (60 GB unit I bought in Feb 07). I asked to speak to a supervisor and politely discussed my dissatisfaction and that my system worked fine before the game. He then read off some script about how Sony is aware of the software causing the Blu-Ray hardware to fail, that they have fixed the problem and will exchange mine out of good faith. They sent me a postage paid box for me to send it back within 3 days, then I dropped mine off and they had it with next day service. They then sent me a 60 GB replacement (looked like new) that I received 3 days later, this passed Monday. I restored my backup and installed some games. MGS4 started the same errors again as well as all my other games locking up. It also displays weird digital artifacts in cut scenes and videos played from PSN. I called them Monday night and they are doing another exchange for me. Sony's service has been excellent, but I really hope they do find and fix this problem.
My 80gig PS3 froze right when I got to the ship too. I don't know why but I hadn't had any problems with my 80 gig till I got to this part of MGS4. I took the game out after restarting it at least 5 times and continue to freeze in different spots of this part of the cinema. Then I put in my GT5 and no problems it seems theres something up with the game.
Most likely your blu-ray drive is toast and you need to send back to Sony to repair/replace.
It would appear Metal Gear Solid 4 has
now killed both of my PS3s. The first was six months old and had been
used regularly (already fixed and returned to me by Sony). The second was
just out of the box, never used for anything else, and dead within
three weeks (sending back to Sony).
Both were CECHG01 - 40gb versions.
Received the disc icon with
question mark in the upper left corner of screen. All discs would no
longer load. Received the following errors: 80029906, 80010514, and
80010007. Cooled unit overnight, deleted game data, restored settings,
restored PS3...dead in the water.
At Konami's recommendation, I have exchanged the game for a new one before using with the fixed PS3. They have no comment other than games don't kill systems (hardware failure). However, my guess is that the cinema-heavy game combined with dual-layer blu-ray disc is simply pushing the system so hard that first generation console flaws are beginning to show.
The
issue appears to be growing in numbers (although small scale for Sony).
As an example, do a Google search for MGS4 freeze or MGS4 killed to see
what I am talking about.
Nobody has any good answers because the problem is not widespread enough.

I have the same problem! Playing MGS4 for a couple of hours then decided to quit the game and shut the system off. Got back to it and it just hang. can't detect the game. tried ejecting the game but it won't take any other game or blue ray discs.

I also have the same problem. My ps3 was fault free until i popped in MGS4. I played for like 5 times w/o harm but then it froze. tHe i restarted the console and tried again. I got the CD with the question mark thing on the top left hand side. I called konami and they said i should change games. i exchanged it and got a new one. I popped that one in and it froze up again. aFter that i reformated the enitre ps3 and when MGS4 was downlaoding it froze again. Now online for Call of Duty 4 also freezes. I whipe my games and my ps3 is in a cool room and i dust it everytime i play.

I have the same disc/question mark problem. I started happening in the last chapter in the ship. I's play a little, it freezes, leave ps3 to cool down, come back 3 hrs later can play again, but for just a little.
I noticed he back of MGS4 disc has waves, is it because it is dual layer?
It does affect other games loading including GTA4.
I got to the last bare hand battle with liquid; froze after i finished him. I just wanna se ending to gamefly it back, and hope to never see this problem again.

Same EXACT problem for me. Except it didnt start freezing for me until my 2nd playthrough, and the problem spread to other games and blu-rays. CDs and PSN content worked fine.

hey I got the same problem too. I have 60GB PS3 and 2 days after I began played MGS4, it started to hang/freeze, and suddenly appear CD icon and "?" mark on the top left corner of my monitor. after I restart my PS3, I can't play the game for more than 5 minutes! I've just googled this problem because MGS 4 has locked up my PS3... This problem seems to be rampant. Sony should atleast acknowledge it and post a fix, or a warning.
