in iphoto under preferences, theres a drop down saying- connecting camera opens. make sure iphoto is selected. Iphoto will automatically open when you plug in your camera, and ask you if you want to import your photos. Also, sometimes I would plug in my camera and forget to turn the power on to it, (lol), so make sure your camera is turned on...;)
