Some menus on the X8310 and X8350 are repeated in the Copy Mode, Scan
Mode, Fax Mode and Photo Card menus.
If you press the
Menu button while in any of the above menus, two ancillary menus will be
listed, Maintenance and Device Defaults.
To select either of
these menus, press the check mark at the center of the
navigation keys on the printer.

The ink levels should reset when the ink jet
cartridge is installed
Another thing which is mentioned at their support site is quote:
If
you have refilled the cartridges you got along with the printer, you can't reset
them. 23 and 24 are not meant to be refilled. They are what Lexmark call "return
program cartridges"- they can't be refilled, you can send them back to Lexmark (
that's why they are called "return cartridges"). You need to buy either 23A and
24A or 34 and 35, those cartridges are refillable.
Here is a link to Lexmark,
with a list of cartridge compatibility for your printer:

It can be reason if the cartridge was filled with the wrong ink or if the cartridge was damaged Also in most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken . Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts. Sometimes the power supply unit must be checked as a poor SMPS unit can deliver low voltage and cause issues to the printer function. Check all the leads and connections of the mother board , the tags to the ink cartridge. Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.
