This photo is from a Samsung DV409AEW, but I assume they are quite likely the same. I also turned the drum (clockwise, which is the wrong way) and the same thing happened. The thud in my case was the spring that holds the tension pulley arm in place falling to the bottom of the dryer. If your situation is the same, spinning the drum caused the belt to come off of the idler pulley and the tension spring fell off. It seems to happen frequently based on web searches.
Again, assuming the DV409Axx is the same, you can get at it from behind. There should be 3 screws (2 on the top and 1 on the bottom) of the plate that holds the vent pipe output assembly. That assembly can then be removed. There will be a vent pipe extension that comes out with the assembly.
Once inside, see if the spring is off, and if so re-attach it per the photo below. It is counter-intuitive that the spring pulls the arm down, rather than to the left. Hopefully this will be your issue.
Putting the pipe extension and outlet assembly back in can take a bit of fiddling... but if you lay on the floor, you can actually shine a flashlight in the crack to see what you're doing.
Hope this helps!
mine di same thing belt after put belt on still will not run
I believe you need to reset the dryer. You can try holding the 'dry time' button down while also powering up. this may get you into test mode after which you can immediately power down to reset.
Thanks, 'Hans. This is pretty close to the configuration on the Samsung DY330AEW/XAA -- the spring attachment is different -- but it saved me almost two weeks waiting for a repair guy.
Warning to all: it seems that every metal edge on my machine is lethally sharp, so be careful when doing this work. [Wish i'd thought of that sooner]
Thank you so much for supplying your directions and picture. This seems to quite common with this dryer. My husband is in the basement now trying to fix this with the help of your directions and picture. so far i havent heard any foul language..ha. maybe i should check on him....nah,, ill stay out of the way,, thank you so much again,, from..wife staying out of the way in ohio...; will keep you informed if the prob was fixed,,
Wow, thanks for posting the picture. That was a big help to me working on the same issue. I wasn't sure exactly how it was supposed to go back together. With this picture it was almost easy. The hard part was stretching the spring back in place. It didn't take me long to realize that reaching my arm up inside there, grasping the end of the spring with my fingers and trying to stretch it into place was a lost cause. Here's what I did:
I got one of my son's Nerf ball to gently wedge between the tensioner pulley and the side panel of the dryer. This help keep the pulley at least close to where it needed to be. Then, I used a pair of vice-grip pliers to grab the end of the spring, and that gave me the leverage I needed to be able to stretch it into place and hook it on the tensioner arm.
Thanks again for the picture!
Great thanks for the pic! This was my issue too. One tip, putting the spring on and THEN moving the tension arm pulley into place is easier than stretching the spring by hand. My units are stacked in a closet so I had to do this from the front. Not too bad. Take the top off, control panel off and front with door off. Reach up from the bottom right side, up over the exhaust pipe to access the pulley. If you have big arms you may have to remove the heating element support bracket and drop the heating element down. Push the pulley up and pull belt down into alignment. Can be done with one hand. Just make sure belt is on the right side. Test it by rotating drum clockwise. Be careful of sharp metal edges and unplug unit prior.

Check to make sure your child lock is off first. Hold the time and signal buttons simultaneously for three seconds. Unlikely, but do check. Some of these dryers have a safety switch that the idler pulley has to engage to allow the dryer to run. I tried to find a schematic for this model but could not get one to tell if you do have a safety switch. Look at the arm of the idler pulley and see if it is contacting the switch actuator correctly. When a belt breaks or pops off, sometimes the arm of the pulley will move to the other side of the switch actuator and will not allow the dryer to run once a belt is reistalled. I would also look to see if a wire was knocked off of the motor switch when your belt came off. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists
Rear Access:
1) On the back where the Vent comes out you have 4 total screws. 3 of them are on the outside edge and the fourth is more of a middle mount that holds the tube to this bracket. Remove all four screws now you can lift and lean this plate to remove it.
2) This will also free up the vent tube and it can be pulled and cleaned also if you desire.
3) With these items out of the way you can now access the pulley for the belt and other items.
