What is the Unknown Device listed under in the device manager? Is it under Network Adapters, Modems, etc.?

Unknown device

Update your Unknown device while in you device manager
Update the device then shut down and restart
or
Uninstall the device from device manager ,right click on the device then uninstall,
Shut down and restart,
the device will be automatically found by your Operating System and reinstalled automatically too,

Everything is now "unknown"

Still can't explain the unknown status of all the files on the device, but I turned the device off for several minutes and when I returned it had zeroed out leaving an empty device ready to reload anything I wanted. I guess I initially cycled it off and on too quickly.

You wont have any problem with this unknown device. Unknown device is problem if this unknown device is VGA, sound, LAN etc There are many devices in comuter which are not as essentailly required. So enjoy :)

Usually available from the company's website, but if not:

Start --> Control Panel --> Printers and Other Hardware --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager - right click on the unknown USB device, click update drivers

I am assumig that you are using Windows XP

could be a virus/spyware/malware, also empty you temp and history files, then restart ur pc.
