Flashing exclamation mark with error message : Print cartridge problem tri-color refer to device documentation This is the message we are getting on an HP Officejet J4540 All-In-One printer which was working fine then all of a sudden quit and gave this message have tried turning off to reset but to no avail what does this mean

The scan options are in your computer, you need to have HP scan software running before it will scan This tells the scanner how to scan, what it's scanning, and where to send the image and how to save it.

A flashing exclamation mark is typically associated with a sever cartridge error (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem" etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #901 / 901XL cartridge are damaged. Have you tried replacing the ink cartridge with a new HP genuine cartridge to confirm?

NOTE: The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on all models which use HP 901 cartridges. Refer to Inkjet411 youtube videos below:

Cartridge error: refer to device documentation to troubleshoot

remove the cartridges and clean the metal contacts with tissue paper and put it back. if the problem continues check the cartridges.

  1. First count the number of times the light on the front of your printer flashes.
  2. Then refer to the table below for information about the error condition and recommended recovery procedures.

    Number of Flashes Error Condition Error Recovery 2 Carrier Stall:
    The movement of the print cartridge carrier has been obstructed. Remove any objects blocking the carrier path.
    4 Print Incomplete:
    The print cartridge carrier stopped in the middle of a print job due to obstruction. Remove any objects blocking the carrier path.
    12 Cartridge Short:
    The printer has detected a short circuit in a cartridge.
    1. Turn the printer off.
    2. Open the front cover.
    3. Turn the printer back on.
    4. Remove the color cartridge.
    5. Close the cover. If there are no flashing lights, the color cartridge is short-circuited.
    6. Remove the black cartridge and then reinsert the color cartridge.
    7. If there is no error indicated by flashing lights, the black cartridge is short-circuited.
    8. If you continue to receive an error indicated by flashing lights, both cartridges are short-circuited.

HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One--Cartridge Error

If a reset hasn't cured this problem you probably need to disassemble the printer and clean the service station and the system board. This normally clear all carriage and cartridge errors, but these machines are quite awkward to take apart.
