Hard drives are just like blackboards and one wrong press of a button can format them or wipe them in the same way a casual brush against a blackboard can render its contents unreadable. With this in mind many operating systems have safeguards in place to prevent this from happening but there are occasions when these safeguards fail or the combination of buttons pressed by mistake.

Hard drive makes clicking noise and won't come on. Same happens upon turning the drive off and on. Is there any way I can recover the files on the drive? Thank you.

When the hard drive makes a clicking noise, it has died (known as the click of death).
A user cannot recover data from these faulty hard drives, but there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Hard drive unaccessible

There is a program called On track recovery.
This application successfully recovers data from damaged hard disks.

You will need and extra storage where to transfer the recovered data.

My hard drive is not working

Evidently the logic structure is damaged so:

1. if you are really lucky, you will recover everything just by installing EASY RECOVERY PRO... (there are free trials on the net) try easy recovery in google.com. The follow the instructions, install the soft. It should place an icon on your desktop, run the program and you will have a wizard, choose what to do, what disk to take (of course with the damaged drive connected) and when it comes to choose... choose "gross recovery" option. You will have to wait for awhile, then you will be in front of a list of directories and files inside... just see carefuly, it will be ordered by file extention (BMP, JPG, AVI, MP3, etc); choose those you need and unselect those you dont.
NOTE: the recovered data must be placed in another disk in a safe folder.

2. the disk is damaged for sure, so once you have recovered all you better replace you HD for a new one.

Start here: http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/, this will do for a trial version, but if you know a little bit more, find yourself a full version on the net.

Good luck
