Carriage Jam -- Paper Jam

I have the same...
We printed some things, then the error was Paper Jam. There is no paper jam, when pressed the "ok" button it will end up stating a Carriage Jam. It will alternate between these two errors.
I have unplugged, reset "holding 3 & #" and have done numerous things.

The only thing that I see is on the right hand side of the carriage hanging by 4 colored wires is some sort of optic thing...not attached to anything. Cuold this be the culprit??

Well there was the optic thing hanging down along the side of the Carriage. It needed to be attached to the side of the Carriage...it was reading a paper jam, or a Carriage jam. So things are good again and we are printing fools once more. Yea.

I think it was not attached very well to begin with, and we started printing some things on a draft mode so when the Carriage was blasting side to side, it must have finally dislodged the optical jam detector.

I have an HP Officejet 7310 All-in-One. Even when I don't print anything my printer displays "Paper jam. Press OK to continue." When I press OK, it just comes back. I've even removed all the paper so it can't jam. What can I do to fix it?

  • ptoifel Jul 18, 2008

I don't see any optic thing in my printer. I've had this printer about 4 months and haven't been able to print for three months. I've checked the trays, inside the back doors, turned it off and back on several times. I've tried to get thin paper through and thick paper through, but it a little clicking sound occurs and it seems like it jams at the beginning of the sheet. I tried to talk my local computer people into looking at it and they said it would be cheaper to buy a new one. I paid $250 for this junk and am surely not buying another HP if I have to buy another printer. Any suggestions?

I have a HP L7580. It originally showed a paper jam. After many attempts, I am sure I have cleared all the paper, but now I get a Paper Jam error and a "clicking" sound from the carriage as if it isn't on track. Any ideas??

Thank you so much! I have a Cannon MP560 which is older than dirt, but still runs like a finely tuned car, except for this glitch - well, I took the advice and put the printer on its back to remove the paper holder, and there it was, a little piece of paper stuck in the white gears. All that for one little piece of paper! Thanks again for the suggestion, I'm back to printing after trying to figure this out for 2 days now!

I have serviced an officejet pro L7580 which was showing a paper jam error when powered on. our customer had had a paper jam and removed the paper . I found small peices of paper in the pick up assy gears. If you remove the rear door, you need to check the 2 small white gears on the left. turn the roller slowly by hand and clear any paper stuck between the teeth. (they may be very small).

after doing this....no more paper jam errors for me!

Thank you thank you thank you .... fixed my problem after 2 hours of searching for a solution :)

Thank you! This was a HUGE help! A little rip of paper was just sitting in the back small white gears when I turned the printer on its side, so I could remove the paper tray, and there it was . . .couldn't see it from the top, and it was so tiny. Removed it, and I'm back in business! I have the Cannon MP560, which is old, but still runs like a finely tuned car. Thanks again!

Carriage jam on hp photosmart printer

The print carriage may get stuck on either side or in the middle of the printer. The Carriage Jam: Open Door, clear carriage jam, and then press OK to continue error message may display on the front panel of the all-in-one.

Solution
The print carriage is the device which contains the print head and moves left to right during printing.
Figure 1: Carriage Assembly

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below in the order presented.

Step one: Print a Self Test

Follow the steps below:
1. Press the Setup button.
2. Select Print Report and press OK .
3. The self-test page should print. If it prints a test page, there is no need to follow the remaining steps, as the error message may be false. Make sure the printer now prints from the computer (if installed on one). If it does not print, proceed to the step two.

Step two: Clear the paper path

Follow the steps below to clear the printer of any jammed paper and reset the printer.
1. Leave the printer on and then disconnect the power cable and the USB or Ethernet cable from the back of the printer. Do not reconnect them until instructed to later.

NOTE: Make sure the printer is on before disconnecting the power cord. Failure to disconnect the power cord from the rear of the unit can cause damage when removing jammed paper.

2. Open the top access door.

Figure 2: Opening the top access door

3. Make note of where the carriage is stuck and look for jammed paper. A paper jam can cause the error message and the carriage stall. Some paper may be jammed in different locations than those shown in the photos below.

Figure 3: Paper jammed on the left side

Figure 4: Top view of paper jammed on the left side

Figure 5: Paper jammed on the right side

Figure 6: Top view of paper jammed on the right side

NOTE: Do not use any tools or other devices to remove jammed paper. Always use caution when removing jammed paper from inside the unit.

If the carriage is stuck on the right side:
a. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
b. Move carriage all the way to the left side.
c. Check the paper path all the way to the right side and remove any paper still in the printer.

If the carriage is stuck on the left side:
d. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
e. Move carriage all the way to the right side.
f. Check the paper path all the way to the left side and remove any paper still in the printer.

If the carriage is stuck in the middle:
g. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
h. Move carriage all the way to the left side.
i. Check the paper path all the way to the right side and remove any paper still in the printer.
j. Move carriage all the way to the right side.
k. Check the paper path all the way to the left side and remove any paper still in the printer.
4. Remove the rear access door or duplexer (if installed) from the back of the printer.
5. Check for and remove any paper still in the printer.
6. Replace the rear access door, and close the top access door.
7. Reconnect only the power cable. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.

NOTE: The printer may go through a warm-up period of up to two minutes. Lights may flash and the carriage may move. Wait until this warm-up period is complete before going to the next step.

8. If the Power light is on steady, print a self-test page as done in Step one.

If the Power light is not on steady and the carriage is still in a stalled position, proceed to the next step.

Step three: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet

Verify that the printer is properly connected to a suitable power source by following the instructions below.
1. Verify that the computer and the printer have a three-prong power plug.
2. Remove the printer cable from any power strips or surge suppressors, and plug it directly into a grounded (three-prong) wall outlet.
3. Try the print job again to see if this step resolved the issue.

NOTE: If the printer prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet while disconnected from any power strips or surge suppressors, the power strip or surge suppressor may not be allowing sufficient voltage to reach the product.

4. If this did not resolve the issue, proceed to the next step.

Step four: Service the product

If you have completed all of the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service your product.hope this helps

Paper wont feed then says paper jam

Got rid of my problem!

In an act of despair I started to poke around the inside of the printer with a wooden match. Especially I found a small black lever mentioned on a Dell web site (general paper jam help page) that could be pressed a little. It is placed just a little bit right of center behind the carriage and just above the roll that feeds the paper beneath the printer heads. I'm not sure if this was what finally did it, but now the paper jam problem has gone away.

Another thing I noticed is that my carriage is now moving to center when I open the top. When the paper jam error was present it always moved to the far left (so I could remove any jammed paper, I suspect)
