Not sure that this info will be of use to you, and i have not tried this on any keyboard, but i had a similar experience with a scale that has a digital display. When i took the thing apart to change its battery i found that the display was actually like a piece of glass. On one edge was a rubber like strip that was the interface between the display and the circuit board. This piece was not seated well against the display part and so the information from the circuit board was only partially making it to the display causing the same sort of result that you describe that you see with the keyboard. You may be able to open up your board and just fiddle with the parts, put it back together and it might start working for you. I had to sort of shim the display with a thin piece of material to get the display to maintain better contact with the rubber strip part. Hopefully, this info will be useful. Good luck!
